I have a reverse osmosis system that produces a little over 2 gallons a day. It cost around $700 including installation. I love it. It was well worth the cost. There are 2 filters beside the reverse osmosis membrane. The filters have to be replaced once a year (about $30 for both). The membrane is supposed to last several years. I've had mine 4 years and haven't had to replace it yet.

Depends on what it is in your water that the RO unit wouldn't get out. I think that for most places that would be extreme overkill. It will leave your water pretty tasteless.

Does anyone know how to build a water purification system using really simple or cheap things? A system that can remove odor, taste and other particles in order to make the water drinkable? Help would be really appreciated. Thank you.
It's for a chemistry project in school. So i have to do it from home, and if i do buy anything, it has to be under 10 dollars.

Water purification is a complex undertaking. In industry these systems have a of engineering in them. You would need ion exchange and carbon bed to purify or a reverse osmosis system. You would be better off renting these from an industrial supply company.

Brittas get build up and can hold bacteria when they are old. If you have metals in your water you need a good filter, if not then one of those UV systems that hook up to the line is great. It kills bacteria and fungus and makes the water taste fresh. Both together would be best, but particle filters have to be changed frequently

the filter part of it has to be able to "filter" very small bacteria--the smaller the size the better--this will eliminate bacteria and protozoa--BUT you then need to take care of virueses---thats what the purifier does..so its has a 2 step process: filtering for bacteria/protozoa and purifying for viruses
