There's a lot of water that comes out of the whole house water filtration system when it cleans itself. Mine is made by Kinetico and it's comes with 2 filter tanks and 1 softener tank. Can I water plants with that water? It is safe for lawn and other plant life? I hate to see all that water go to waste.

there is no salt in soft water, there are sodium ions. salt is sodium chloride. i water my yard and flowers with soft water and have no problems. water softeners remove much of the chlorine from the water. i would be more concerned with the effect of spraying them with heavily chlorinated water.

I live in an area with hard water that leaves all my dishes coated with lime. Plus, the water has known carcinogens. I don't want to cook with it or bathe with it at all.

A water softener will solve your hardness problems. An under-sink RO (reverse osmosis) system will solve most other problems for drinking/cooking water. However, RO will not remove water-soluble contaminants. What carcinogens are you talking about? Heavy metals are highly soluble in water, so if you are talking about mercury or lead, then it is important to look at ion exchange resin.

On a side note, carcinogens in the water supply should be reported to the EPA. The city/county/municipality is responsible for the water they supply to you. This should include the cost of determining the source of the contaminants, rectifying the situation, and covering incidental medical. If this is a well supply, then you should check local codes for liability.

A filter merely filters the water and removes solids. A softener uses salt and another tank to remove the hardness. To answer your question, yes, you need the softener.
