Filter removes both kinds of iron from water. Then water enters house thru hot water heater, then dispersed throughout house. Terrible smelly odor when it comes out of tap. Any reason this would happen after 9 years of good water?
is it just the hot or both?? anything new added to the system?? replace that filter? when was the tank last flushed out to remove any sediments at the bottom???

Old farm house on a well needs an iron filter, if you fill a tub you can see some discolorment and it has an odor, i've been told it's safe to shower or bathe in but i'm still concerened because im pregnant and I have my 3 yr old here. I've done some research on my own about the presence of iron in water, and the "rotten egg smell" that can sometimes be associated with it, but my water doesn't seem to have an odor. Can someone suggest a product that might work for me?

I have changed the filter, used iron out, have filled the salt well in the water softner, i even had a new water heater installed last week, the smell is so foul i feel like i am taking a shower with dirty water?
Does it smell like sulfur - like when you light a match?
Animals have been know to fall into wells - usually just snakes and frogs.
Dump some clorine bleach into it (a quart or a bit more per 1000 gallons) and see if that helps.
Have you sent a sample for testing first?
Check with your county heath agency or agriculture department (if you are in an agricultural areas) and they will test it.
The health deparment can also condemn it - if it's bad enough.
There are also private labs that will test it.
The do-it-yourself kits usually test for about 8 common things.
They are OK, but expensive and may not test for what you have.
To take a sample, let the cold water run for about 3 minutes, and then fill a clean baggie or jar with around a cup of water.
Keep cold until you can take/send it in.
I have to buy the water specially for irons as I live in an area that has really hard water.
If I use the water filter I have for drinking water - will this be ok and do the job the same as the shop bought water - or will I destroy my iron through lime scale?
I have extremely hard water and use filters but it does not remove the lime from the water. If you want to keep the iron working well, the distilled water is best. The regular water will not destroy your iron because you can clean it using vinegar to flush out the scale but it is a pain to do it regularly.

There is an ongoing debate about the dangers of adding fluoride to our public water supply. If you have decided you do not want to ingest fluoride with every drink you take then you should use a fluoride filter to remove fluoride from your drinking water.
