What are some good reverse osmosis h2o filter options for a residential water line?
Porsche 911 GT1 engine details cartoon, drawing, digital colors

My husband would prefer NOT to have a separate faucet line for filtered water, so we would need an in-line drinking water filter for our kitchen sink. He would also prefer NOT to have to depend on a plumber to install it.

99% of residential water lines do not need R.O. systems they are made for homes with wells for filtering small amounts of nitrates out of the water.99% of residental water is already filtered.

Has anyone used a home inline water filter system they would recommend
The city water system is really bad.Well know for build up and corrosion. The dogs water bowl builds up with a clear hard like crust on the bottom. You have to scrub it out.The coffee pot needs complete cleaning every month. No smell to water. If this is any clues to a good filter system.

Here's a site that lists a comparison table of 10 different filter systems, including links to discussions about water filtration.

Last year, I got an Aqua-Safe reverse osmosis system with 6-stage filtration (the RO membrane, one particulate filter, three carbon filters, and one ion exchange filter). It generates 100 gallons per day and comes with a 5 gallon storage tank. It cost about $200 and it came with a 5-year supply of replacement filters, including replacement ion resin beads. It takes my water from about 3000 PPM to under 5 (it even came with a digital PPM meter).

The water that comes out of it is as good as any I have ever tasted. We also have a line running from it to our refrigerator. So, the ice is very clear and the cold water coming from the dispenser is awesome.

I highly recommend a reverse osmosis system, if you have the room and can afford it.

Can I put a water filter on the hot water line to my washer?
Porsche 911 GT1 engine pipes cartoon, hoses, soft stuff, normal colors

I currently have a whole house filter on the cold water line to my washer to help filter rust. Can I also put one on the hot water line on my washer? Or is it bad to put a filter on the hot water line?

If I were you I would first consider putting a whole house filter on the main line coming into the house (all the hot water was first cold) and opening the drain of the water heater open every now and then to take any sediment off the bottom of it. The hot water is drawn off the top of the heater tank. Further filtering after that would seem senseless to me. I would not put a normal filter on the hot water side. If you can find one that is rated for hot water , then it wouldn't hurt, but shouldn't help. If you feel you must filter the hot water separately, put one on the inlet (cold) side of the water heater.
The only other issue is whether you have iron pipes and they are rusting. Then it would be time to replace the pipes, not filter the water. Oh, the same applies to the water heater, if it is rusting inside, then it should be replaced.

Edit: This in no way changes what I've already said, but I did find the following info:
Cold water filters range in temperature ratings from 100°F to 120°F. The approximate temp. of people's hot water who try to keep the temp. down is about 120°F/borderline temp., but there are water contamination safety issues raised with this temperature (see link below). You will also have more of a tendency to run out of hot water at that temp., if you are already close to that situation. So, a cold water filter would not be advisable, IMO, to use for hot water.
I did find a site with hot water filters (see second link below) - one that is rated and priced about right for home use. $95/160°F (probably ok - I'd check the actual temperature of your water). The filter cartridges themselves cost about the same as cold water filters ($11 or so ea.).
They also have commercial/300°F filters but they start at $225.
I will repeat this, using other words, if you have a rust problem in your pipes or heater, using a filter is only going to put off fixing the problem. The worse it gets (and it will get worse), the more often you will have to change filters, until you finally fix the problem.
I did just have one other thought. I grew up in Florida with very bad well water. We had a large outside water filtering/softening system, and it was necessary until we finally got city water. If that is your situation, consider a softener.

How Do I maintain the water pressure and flow when I install a water filter in my home cold water line.?
On the Connecticut River

Presumably the questioner is concerned about the effect of the pressure loss when the filter is installed. The simple answer is that there is always some pressure reduction but it is not usually very important.

This is true if the highest point in the house has a fawcet where the problem of low pressure already exists without the filter, then this situation will get worse and the flow there will become very low indeed or cease altogether. However in most situations this is not a problem and the loss in pressure will be found to have a small effect only when you want the maximum rate of flow possible, which is not very often.

Should the loss of pressure be very significant a booster pump could possibly be installed, after the filter, to restore the situation to what it was without the filter or better. Such a pump requires a power supply and this is probably from the electrical system. As a consequence it is not 100% sure in some places and occasionally there will be a water shotrage due to this. The answer to this is either to have a means of by-passing the pump or to provide an alternative pump that can be hand-operated..
