anybody recommend a water filter that has no nasty aftertaste. this is an outdoor filter that goes directly to refrigerator that dispenses water. it is a small filter.

My town has recently started to receive water from a reservoir that is being treated with increased levels of chlorine (the extra chlorine was added to manage the presence of some harmless microscopic organisms).

Anyway, inside my home I can easily manage the additional chlorine with filter pitchers or, in the case of my aquarium, water treatment additives. Outside, however, is another story. I have my beautiful veggie garden, and I'm afraid of the damage I can do when I water it with that strongly chlorinated water.

Is there a filter of some kind I can attach between the exterior faucet and my hose so that I can avoid spraying my garden with chlorine? In my internet searching, I can't seem to find anything.

I actually have a rainbarrel I use to water my containers and annual beds. I don't use that water on my veggies because it is coming off the roof and down the gutters, and therefore I'm not all that sure what it brings with it. All I know is I wouldn't drink that water, so neither do I want to eat it on my veggies :).

So I just need a solution for watering the veggies, and, again, I appreciate the links to the hose filters. Just what I was looking for!

Well, a couple things come to mind right away. One is that the chlorine that is added to your water supply is not stabalized and therefore would break down fairly rapidly if left exposed to air like in a rain barrel or large tub left outside. The other is, why not catch rain water for use in your garden. The only filter that I can think of that would solve your problem is a whole house reverse osmosis filter system with activated charcol secondary filters. Expensive. I owned a filter system like this once, it required an annoying amount of maintenance and annual cost. But it worked. Good Luck.

I have a lot of outdoor potted plants, and I moved to a new city that has harsh water! Is there a way to make my own filter to take out all the hard treatment chemicals so my plants stop dieing?

If you have a way to capture rain water that would be the best. Otherwise I think you should just buy a Brita water filtering jug and use that. The basis of the filter is charcoal and that's pretty natural. The same thing a doctor would give a patient that has overdosed on pills to absorb the toxins.

I'm building a pond for my turtles this weekend. I'm thinking I will need a water heater for the fall (i'll bring them in for winter) and some type of filter for the water. I need suggestions for them (like a brand or something). The pond will be the size of one of those small plastic kiddie pools. Filter will need to be strong enough to handle that amount of water and the waste of 2 red eared sliders and multiple fish (for them to snack on).

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

wow I'm doing the same thing but slowly this time we made a 60 gallon pond and it has now risen from the rain and the pump has burned out and it is a true mess so we went up to a 140 gallon pond which is a above ground now we haven't made it yet like I said slowly- but we are putting in a waterfall up higher than the pond and more of a flat surface for my turtle so she can sun more than just on the log and no food will go in pond - my fish are huge now so they go- only small ones to eat bugs she wont eat fish it was such a pain in such a small area it stunk and if you don't put light down in the water you can never see any thing except the rare times they come out as we know that's why there called sliders lol so I suggest make it bigger go to a really good pond or fish store that sells pond stuff like Ocean Floor- get a good filter system they can help it will cost you about four hundred dollars for filter and pump you can look on line cheaper-good luck and try to go bigger!!! IT is hard I know and expensive but the filtration system will last for years it has been tested try LAGUNA at www.lagunaponds.com best of luck my pond friend try looking on line there are many above, container and in ground ponds to see and directions-and a heater yes I live in az and use one only when its is cold she says out all year does fine get it at pet smart make sure you cage it they will chew and bump it good luck

I just moved into a rental house and the previous tenant missed taking a few of the goldfish with her. I didn't realize they were there for a month. I bought food, but it doesn't look like they are eating it. The water is green and murky. I have a small pump circulating the water but it has no filter. Do I need one? Do I need to put plants in the water? How about chemicals? I know nothing of fish!!

If the fish aren't eating, quit throwing food in there. The green water indicates that there's too much organic material in there now. The fish will find tons of things to eat. Don't go throwing a bunch of chemicals in the water. Begin by changing small amounts of water frequently,and try to remove as much "gunk" from the water as you can,without creating a mess. This is not a fast process,but it's the safest way to revive the pond. Be sure to replace the water that you remove with treated water(dechlorinated). You can find dechlorinating products at pet stores or even the pet departments at the "big box" stores.
You probably don't need a filter as long as you don't go adding more fish. The small circulating pump should provide enough oxygenation,and the frequent small water changes should begin to clear the water. After you get the water cleared up,then begin very small feedings,and if the fish don't eat,don't feed them.
As far as plants go, they would help by removing some of the nutrients, that are feeding the algae, that are making the water green. But the plants are not necessary. Your choice.
The only chemical that you absolutely need is dechlorinator solution(if you have a source of un-chlorinated water like a well or cistern) then you don't need dechlorinator either.
Be patient,and try not to make any sudden changes.
