This is for a science (specifically Chemistry) lab we were doing. Our teacher brought out a beaker with a muddy mix of water and dirt, telling us to try and seperate the dirt from water and produce as much pure water as possible. We have access to all the equipment at school, like the bunsen burners, beakers and such. He instructed us to create an original way to filter out the dirt. We are allowed to bring materials or supplies from home, although he suggested not to bring coffee filters as that isn't very original... and I have been brainstorming with no conclusions. Any suggestions or cool ideas?
Make a water still. Separate the pure water from the dirt through distillation, either by evaporation (slow) or by heating it to boiling (fast). Have the pure water vapor condense and drip into a clean unsealed flask.
Seal your flask of muddy water with a stopper with a hole in it. Attach tubing to the flask through the stopper. Arrange the tubing so that it goes to a much higher level (try at least 1 foot), then loosely coil it downward and have the open end inside a clean empty flask that is not sealed (you don't want to build up pressure that might explode the flasks, so make sure the tubing is not kinked and the flask is open to air.) Heat the muddy water over a bunsen burner to boiling. The water vapor that escapes will travel up through your tubing and when cooled by the lower temperature of the air around the coiled tubing, it will condense back into water and drip into your clean flask, giving you fairly pure water.

If a drink calls for pure water, can you substitute it with boiled water instead? Cause I'm trying to de-tox but I'm not sure if there will be any consequences. ;x This question sounds stupid lol.
So, is there ANY difference between pure water and boiled water?
yes, pure water is distiled. which means it goes through a process just like booze. it gets boiled in a vessel and the vapors are condensed through a series of tubing that is cooler then the surrounding air. this results in the water vapor turning back to liquid, you now have purified water, or pure water.
For example, a barrell with a density of 1.0, and one cubic foot of air in it, how much force can be applied on it before it sinks, assuming its placed in pure water?
There are a number of forces to keep track of:
1. the weight of the barrel
2. the weight of a cubic foot of air
3. the weight of water displaced by the barrel
4. the weight of water displaced by the cubic foot of air
The weight of water displaced will equal the amount of force resisting the submersion of the barrel.
Since the barrel conveniently has a density of 1.0 (equal to pure water), we can ignore it completely (its downward weight balances the upward displacement force)
To submerge the barrel, the downward force and the downward weight of air must equal the upward force generated by the displaced water. Since the air density is not mentioned, and water is over 800 times as dense as air at normal sea level pressure, we can ignore the weight of air for a first order approximation.
Downward force = weight of water = (volume of water) x (density)
Pure water has a density of 1.0, or 62.42 lb/cu.ft
Downward force required is ~ 62.42 lbs. For a more accurate result, feel free to include the slight effect of the air (about .07 lbs)

How much pure water a day should you drink?
When people say you should drink 64 oz. of water a day, does that include juices and other water-based drinks as well? If I drank 8 oz. of apple juice and 8 oz. of water… would that be the same health wise as if I'd drunk 16 oz. of water? What about milk? I mean, as long as it doesn't contain alcohol, caffeine, salt, or other things that might dehydrate you, what's the difference? Wouldn't it be equivalent to eating the powdered version and then drinking water?

Water all over the world is becoming increasingly unsafe for consumption. While you are drinking the water from a tap or a source like bottled water, you have to secure the fact that it is pure enough to drink. Remember that contaminants and pollutants can perpetuate every variety of water. These could enter the water in bottling plants or the common corporation pipes that provide you with water. Water is today affected by both organic and inorganic wastes. Also important is the nature of the water treatment system that the water is passing through. These will definitely ensure a certain level of purification but that necessarily does not mean that all the harmful contaminants have been taken care of. Bottling firms too have conceded to the fact that they do not necessarily make use of the best water treatment system possible.
A public water system is efficient. But obviously this water comes with a high concentration of contaminants which need to be taken care of. Bottled water could be an alternative. But you also have to bear the expenses of that.
