Filter/Boil. This has worked for thousands of years. I would also go out and by a chemical purifying tablets. Get them at a camping store. If things get bad...Set up a tarp that curves inwards, put the nasty water underneath and heat. It will condense on the tarp and roll down into the sides. Funnel it into a container.

You can wave them across a jug of un-purified water to purify it? What is that particular light called?

Dose anyone own one? Do they take alot of batteries?
What do they purify the water of?

The devices are called Steripen - uses ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and virus' in the water when you stir the water with the pen for 90 seconds.

I've seen one that operates on two CR123 lithium batteries, & I've seen one that uses AA batteries, I've not heard about battery consumption yet.

I have heard that it is difficult to use them in normal sized (32 oz.) Nalgene bottles and almost impossible to use them in Camelbaks.

The simplest way to purify water is to boil it for 10 minutes. You need a fire, and a vessel in which you can boil the water.
# Or, using an eye dropper, add 8 drops of liquid chlorine bleach per gallon of water, 16 drops if the water is cloudy, and let stand for 30 minutes.
# Or, using a 2% tincture of Iodine (from a first aid kit), add 20 drops per gallon of water, 40 drops if the water is cloudy, and let stand for 30 minutes.
# Or, use water purification tablets available at drug stores and sporting goods stores. Follow directions on the label.
# Or, use a commercial water filter that removes bacteria, protozoa, viruses, and chemicals.

Things You’ll Need:
6 Feet Surgical Tubing, 6'x6' Clear Plastic Sheeting, Camp Cups
Step1
Build your solar still in the lowest, dampest area you can find - at the base of a hill, in a dry streambed or at the base of a dried-up gorge. This is where ground water accumulates and is the best place for gathering it.
Step2
Carry a sheet of strong plastic 6 feet by 6 feet, a cup or a container, and 6 feet of plastic tubing with you in your pack. In extreme survival situations you may be forced to make due with whatever you have. Understanding the principles of the solar still will enable you to adapt to your situation.
Step3
Dig a large hole in the ground, 2 feet deep and 3 feet in diameter. The idea is to dig down to damp soil.
Step4
Place your container, centered, in the bottom of the hole.
Step5
Place one end of your plastic tubing in the container.
Step6
Cover the hole with the plastic sheet. Use the dirt from the hole to weight the plastic surrounding the hole, so that no air can escape. Make sure the free end of the plastic tubing is accessible.
Step7
Use a small rock to weight the center of the plastic down over the cup, creating a cone over your cup with the point pointing into your cup.
Step8
Understand that as the sun heats up the soil, moisture evaporates and condenses on the plastic. This condensed moisture drips to the lowest portion of the plastic and then drips off into your cup.
Step9
Drink from your cup by sucking on the tubing. That way you don't have to disassemble your still to get a drink.
Step10
Realize that only pure water evaporates, so that in the evaporation process, most of the impurities are left in the soil.

You are to invent a water purifier since you are not allowed to go out of the cave because if you do you will be exposed to radioactive materials brought by the explosion of a big nuclear plant..So what will you do to purify the water in the cave or tunnel?

Filtration or boiling , or both would be my alternative.

how do you purify water without solar energy in emergency?
i mean that you have to have it really fast, because you are in an emergency and all that. you can't go around trying to find a boiler or chemicals. is that possible?

You can use iodine tablets, add a small amount of bleach, boil it, or use an ultrafilter.
