I am planning to soften my water for all round benifit in the home.
I also want to purify my drinking water through a reverse osmosis system.
Can these 2 things be used together or can only 1 system be used?
If they can be used together can a reverse osmosis system purify softened water safely for drinking?
Short answer is Yes
You can use the RO to filter the softened water. A decent RO system will also have pre and post filters.
A 5 to 10 micron prefilter protects the RO filter membrane from being plugged up by particulate matter in the water. An activated carbon post filter improves taste and polishes the RO water.
Treated RO water is then stored in a small accumulator (pressure tank with a bladder in it) .
Treating water with an RO filter tacks some time and uses water in roughly a 5:1 ratio. Send 5 gallons of water to the RO to get 1 gallon of treated water the remaining water is then sent to a drain.
As a result you use RO water for drinking and maybe supplying water to an Ice maker. The unit will treat a gallon or two and store it for use once the accumulator is topped off the RO unit stops treating water. So no water is used when the RO is in standby.

I have a 75 gallon tank and am planning on putting in discus. How do you use a reverse osmosis filter system?
you don't automatically need one....
In fact i rarely see them, not to say they don't work but know your water first.
second Discus are now being breed in straight up tap water and don't need half the water conditioning they use to.
So ask were your getting them from if they are in fact breed in city water. If not you may want to move on.
An R.O system is just a tank with a membrane, tap water goes threw and gets squeezed threw a .5 to .1 micron membrane into a holding tank.
then out a spout to you.
Use that water to fill your tank, most people buy small r.o systems and put them under there kitchen sink.
Other people to just to a water store and buy 15 gallon jugs of the stuff for 4 dollars.

I just changed the filters in my reverse osmosis filtration system. The instructions say to run the water for 24 hours. This seems excessive with the drought. Do I really need to let the water run for that long?
Is there carbon in the filters? Do they put things in filters that we shou;dnt be consuming and how do we know it is all out after 3 tanks?
Over the next 24 hours, you will need to fill the tank and emply it at least 3 times. It is done that way to get the carbon out.

Just recently moved into a house with an Aquasky reverse Osmosis system that feeds our drinking water, and ice maker. We've been in the house for a month and everything has been great, but the system is not producing water anymore. I have no clue about how these things operate. Any help would be appreciated!
Filtered water and RO water are different. Filtered water is for drinking and and cooking. It can also be used for the dishwasher and the showers and faucets. It take away alot of the mineral that cause "hardness" and leave the stains. But, RO water is completely filtered and is good for making clear ice cubes ( and microchips chip and nuclear energy, but that is different). The reason ice cubes are clear is because of no minerals.
As far as your filter. You may have to flush it or backwash all the stuff that has been filtered out. You may want to call someone that installs them for a inspection. Or get some information at a place like Home Depot, Lowes, or even Sears. The filter may be clogged. Also, some newer refrigerators have the filters built right in- ours is and the filter is $35.

All villages in certain districts of Punjab that are affected by salinity in water will have reverse osmosis (RO) plants within 21 months to provide clean water to villagers, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal said Thursday.
The districts of Ferozepur, Bathinda, Faridkot, Mansa and Muktsar in south-west Punjab are known as the cancer belt of the state. Much of this is attributed to contaminated water.
Sukhbir Singh Badal Thursday directed water supply and sanitation department officials to examine the quality of water in these areas and find if there was any linkage of the rising incidence of cancer with the quality of ground water in this region.
Badal said that technology should be used to ensure clean, potable water to residents of the "difficult" villages.
The World Bank had sanctioned a Rs.12.8 billion (Rs.1,280 crore) project in 2007 for providing safe water to all 12,000 villages in Punjab.
