how important is a deionization unit for home water purification system (reverse osmosis)?

the deionization unit adds 25% to the cost, so I'm wondering how much value does it really add

Depends on what it is in your water that the RO unit wouldn't get out. I think that for most places that would be extreme overkill. It will leave your water pretty tasteless.

My RO/DI Water Filtration System Reverse Osmosis Deionization

Reverse Osmosis Deionization System

Is there any use for the waste water that comes out of a reverse osmosis deionization water filtration unit?

Well, that would depend greatly upon what sort of water you are deionizing.

If, for example, you were making drinking water from sea water, the waste water could be further dehydrated via evaporation and sold as sea salt for a very good price.

If you were purifying municipal water for some biological purpose, the waste water would not likely be of much use because the municipal treatment plant would likely have taken out almost everything already and add only a bit of chlorine in the form of sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite or some such. The clorine would likely damage your reverse osmosis membrane, so there would be some sort of pre-treatment with something like sodium thiosulfate to neutralize the chlorine before it reached the reverse osmosis membrane, so your waste water would end up contain a mixture of sodium and/or calcium chlorides and sodium and/or calcium sulfates, which I don't imagine would be of much use to anyone, but then I don't know everything . . .

A third example: If you were purifying water from a relatively unpolluted surface water source, say a cleanish lake or river, my guess is that the waste water would make a pretty darned good fertilizer for agricultural use.

I want animation of demineralisation/deionisation process of water, where to look for?

I need this for my presentation.

which is more damaging? drinking bottled water or tap water?

San Fran got me thinking about this, they are banning bottled water in city owned places...salt lake city also has done this.

the argument for banning is plastics and transportation....but i was thinking (as an LA resident) that water is a valuable resource. I remember somewhere that for every cup of water you drink it ends up taking another cup to wash that same cup for reuse...

yes there are all sorts of variables...flouride in the tap water...crap from my galvanized plumbing in the tap water

my first instinct says that tap with a deionization filter is the way to go.
tiffy that was a dumb answer...you did not address anything related to plastics...dont just answer to get some silly points....unless this is what yahoo answers has become

Tiffy is not all that wrong and neither are you. I come from a place where the water is a commodity that shouldn't be wasted. When the manufacturers of "Water from melted glaciers" or what ever advertisement that is slapped on those plastic bottles (that take millions of years to disintegrate) had better be true or there may be lawsuit in the making. I used to drink only those expensive bottles of imported water until I tried the filtered water and couldn't taste the difference. Go figure.
As far as concern for washing a glass - don't think so as there are other dirty dishes involved. Or use paper - at lease they will disintegrate in to the ground making the ground fertile for a sapling to grow.
Yes - go with your instinct.

Water Deionization

February 16, 2010 in Water Basics

Deionized water is one which does not have any dissolved solids in them. The method of deionization is used for distilling the water and make it pure enough for drinking. Deionized water can be defined as that water which has no ions in it. It is for the same reason that it is called as deionized water.

The deionised water is considered as the best water for drinking purposes. There are various systems available which initiates the process of water deionization.

Process Of Water Deionization:

The process of deionization exchange of ions is involved and a reversible process takes place in which impure ion is replaced by the pure ion released by the resin of the water purification tank. The impure ion which is taken up by the resin is restored and regenerated into the pure ionic form.

I got the same VIP treatment that you experienced. He's a pleasure to deal with. It's great to be able to speak with someone so knowledgeable and experienced. As far as the CRspotless, I concur, it works just as advertised. It's a great time and swirl mark saver. I received the cr spotless from Moe on saturday. Used for the first time this afternoon. In a word...incredible.Even the windows are cleaner and require no wiping off after wash. Worth every penny. Moe was a pleasure to work with....had a delivery problem and Moe offered a free refill for my inconvenience. Even my wheels are shinier. I was doubtful at first but a friend if mine kept raving about it so I decided to try it. Im glad I did....
