Water Filter Cartridges - how long do they last?

I'm about to buy a water filtering thing, and just wondering if anyone could tell me roughly how long the cartridges last for??

It depends on usuage.

I have a Brita with a little timer on the lid that is supposed to tell you when the filter needs changing. It is only a very rough guide at best because it is just that, a (four week) timer which obviously assumes a certain amount of usage each day.

I've found that for me the timer says the filter needs changing when there is still plenty of life left in it. You can tell by the taste of the water when the filter is not at it's best and needs replacing. For me and my usuage this is at least two to three months.

Britta Water Filter Cartridges, how long do they last?

I have a Britta jug type water filter with a timer in the lid which tells me to fit a new filter about every month.
How accurate is this device or is it designed to sell more of the very expensive filter cartridges before they are actually needed .
Without this timer how long will a filter cartridge actually work properley?


A month is about right. Over the month you will see differences in the taste and the speed of how long the water takes to filter.

Does anyone know where I can recycle water filter cartridges in the Oxford area?

It seems a great waste just to throw them away.


Which brand are they?
I know that Brita encourage theirs to be recycled. They have a Freepost address to which you can send used cartridges back.
And they're putting recycling bins in certain shops now as well. Have a look at the link below for further information.

I can get a gallon of spring water from the supermarket for 90pence. Is it worth getting a water filter?


I used my filter for about two months before replacing it. It really depends on the amount of calcification in your water. If the magnesium is very visible on the surface of hot tea, you'll be using it about a month.
The other thing is the reduction of plastic waste from bottles.
In Northern England the water is very low in calcified deposits, so the water doesn't really need filtering, just allow the light chlorine aroma to disappear. In the places like the South East, the water is horribly calcified.

Can I use Brita filter cartridges in my Kenwood filter kettle and Kenwood filter cartridges in my Brita water filter machine?
Are they interchangeable?
