What is a dual media filter in water treatment process?
Sunset Silhouettes

Dual media filter is a type of filter used to purify drinking water. It is used by water treatment companies. I want to know the advantages and disadvantages of using dual media filter.

Dual media refers to the number of filter materials in use. For example, the first stage of the filter might be one to catch the coarse particles such as a pleated fine mesh paper material. The second stage of the filter could be a finer mesh media or maybe a netted bag of carbon particles to remove smell or taste.

The advantage of course is efficiency of the filter and effectiveness. Different conditions dictate what media choice you make. The best method I have encountered is of course, a graduated mesh media, starting with a larger opening mesh, then stepping down to a smaller mesh and so on. The final stage of filtration would likely be one that removes smell or taste from the water. The bottom line in advantages is that the fewer number of passes through the filter, the better as long as you achieve a good end product.

How often should an Aqua Maid water softener media (filter) be replaced?

We had our water softener for 7 years and the filter media lasted for 6 years. When it was time to change it, the softner released a brown dye in the water, that let us know it was time to be serviced. We had the filter media replaced and a year later the dye is being released again. The repair man says we need new filter media but I don't understand why it last so long before and this time it only lasted a year. I am wondering if our service man did it correctly last time or even if he is honest. Does anyone know anything about the Aqua Maid reverse osmosis drinking water system 5 stage unit? Is it normal to replace the media once a year?

If the dye is showing, its time. It sounds like it may have been done incorectly last time. Check all other parts around filter.

Can I use a salt water filter for a fresh water tank?

I bought a 55 gallon set up from a friend that was moving. It was originally a Salt water tank so it has a salt water filter with square media.

Can this be used for the fresh water tank as well? If not what should I use for a 55 gallon tank?

We are also going to get a gravel vacuum, a heater, and eventually some fish....
It seems to be a "Wet Dry" type of filter

no problem. however, u must cycle the water a little longer to allow for beneficial freshwater bacteria to culture on the media first. give it a month before adding fish. you should be fine.

Did I just killed the good bacteria in my filter media when I poured water into it?

I have also read some stuffs about good bacteria in the filter media. I have just filled up my tank with tap clean water and plan to let it sit for 2 days. Also, I added a dechlorinator tab into it. The problem is, I think I poured some water from the tank into the filter box(or whatever you call it) to get it stat running, BEFORE I added the dechlorinator. Would that really kill my good bacteria in my filter media, where I have to get a new one or something and start all over?? or that should be fine because now the water is being filtered and the dechlorinator tab has been diluted. And I can just let it sit for 2 days then start my Nitrogen cycle??

Is this a brand new filter with brand new medium? That's what it sounds like to me. If it is then don't worry because you don't have a colony of good bacteria to kill yet. You won't have that until you've cycled your tank.

If it's an established colony of bacteria then you killed at least some of it if not all. Chlorine is in tap water to kill bacteria and that's what it's going to do. Although it's not like there's enough in there to kill a well established colony of bacteria instantly. That much chlorine would kill you to drink. The chlorine in drinking water is enough to kill off the tiny amounts of bacteria that find their way into your pipes.

Either way go ahead as planned. The worst thing that happens is you have to cycle from scratch rather than getting a jump start.

How can I make a media filter just out of like a plastic water bottle or something??

I have to show my class what a media filter is [media=sand] I'm only in eighth grade, so please nothing to hard or difficult or complicated. Ciao!!

Try this out
Cut the top of the bottle (use a knife but be very careful)
Fip the botlle top up side down
Put some peices of cloth, or cotton, or something let water out but not the sand. Make sure you cover the whole bottle top
Fill sand in, pack it tight
Pour water in
It may fail if you can't hold the sand. (depend on the sand 's quality, you will have good/bad water)

Feeling guilty about your bottled water? Or worried that it is not as pure as the pastoral scene on the label implies? Your worries are justified. Bottled water is unregulated in the US, and often as not, it is just filtered tap water – with a heavier carbon footprint thanks to the requisite plastic container and the shipping.

Luckily, just as you’re re-evaluating this resource-intensive habit, so is everyone else, from the cities that have passed bottled water taxes (hello Chicago) to the bottled water companies themselves, to entrepreneurs trying to figure a better way.

Culligan, the big kahuna of bottled water service companies now makes a cooler that hooks up to your tap – an apparent concession that the days of carting around those big blue bottles are numbered.

But one of the most unique solutions to filling your cup without filling the landfill may be generating your own purified water. You can do that by tapping into the humidity in the air with an Atmospheric Water Generator, which pulls water from “thin air,” as long as that air registers at least 35 percent humidity.

Siemens Extends Oil Removal Product Offering - Pollution ...

    &Nbsp;

Siemens will use its sales and service organization in Saudi Arabia to distribute and support the MyCelx product line, which includes proprietary advanced coalescer and oil removal technology, as well as proprietary filtration media.

The MyCelx technologies complement Siemens' water treatment technologies, acting as a polisher for API and CPI separators, hydrocyclones, flotation cells, and multi-media filters, or as pretreatment for Siemens' broad array of membrane separation technologies. MyCelx advanced coalescer and oil removal technologies are effective at removing free, dispersed and emulsified, and soluble oil droplets down to 0.09 microns. The proprietary technology makes it possible to achieve stringent offshore discharge limits as well as treat oily wastewater by making it suitable for feed to a reverse osmosis system.

MyCelx technology and filter media captures and removes hydrocarbons from air and water in as little as a single pass, and delivers efficiency in a very small footprint - usually 1/10th the footprint of competing polishing technologies. MyCelx filtration media are highly sustainable because they only activate in the presence of oil. The filters are not consumed in the absence of pollution and retain their filtration ability without water logging. The filters also produce very little differential pressure to saturation, reducing energy consumption and the carbon footprint of environments in which they are used.
