Although I could not find anything regarding the usage of hay in water filtration, similarities to what you're looking for do exist.
2000 B.C records the first historical instructions for the purification of drinking water. Along with general methods such as boiling, Sanskrit texts explain that water "may be purified by filtration through sand and coarse gravel and then allowed to cool."

I would use one, but only in water that I was pretty sure was safe to drink anyways. There are two different types of straws, one has chemicals the water passes through, the other has a filter. The type with the filter has a pretty coarse filter, and while it does an ok job, the pump filters do a much better job. If you realize you might be drinking beaver piss, you probably want the best filter you can get. If you are just getting the water right out of a spring, and want to be safe instead of sorry, you'd be ok with a straw. If you are downstream from a cattle pasture, you'll want a better filter, and possibly a charcoal filter, or even better, bottled water.
I'm interested in the clean water issue happening across the world. I recently heard through a friend that there is actually a straw that can filter water, which if given to people who don't have clean water, would be a cheap and easy way to temporarily solve the problem. I was wondering if anyone had any information about this contraption or where i could find more info about it. Thanks~

Hey, I have a Sport Berkey and I'm not quite sure about maintenance and cleaning. The official brochure doesn't give much information. What do you do about the straw tip? I know that'll get gross after a while. Does the inside of the container ever get "slimy"? How long can I leave it filled up with water just sitting in it? Will the plastic from the container ever leach into the water and if it does can that get filtered out too?
