I am trying to get a list of types of filtering processes for a power point presentation. So far I only have two, Reverse Osmosis, and Distilled Water. I am not looking for particular brands of filtering, just WAYS of filtering water at home / office.

There are a number of methods of water filtration, each with varying degrees of effectiveness, and varying costs
Activated Carbon (AC) Water Filters
Ultraviolet (UV) Water Filters
Water Distillation (Water Distillers)
Sand Filters
Reverse Osmosis

I am looking to buy a water filtering pitcher and I would like to know which brand is the best out there.

The two biggest brands are Brita & PUR. I've used both but I like the PUR on my faucet better. On pitchers the Brita is king & you can't get any easier.

Basically Brita has two types of filters the one that's screwed on to the tap and jug types. They actually filter out different things. Jugs filter out mercury, coper and some other heavy metal.

So why not use both? Turn your first on, and pour water into the second one?

No, it doesn't that the whole point.

There is no need to use both. A filter on the faucet removes the harmful parts. The pitcher filter also removes the same harmful parts so why do it twice.

Also, regarding the cost: buy the filters when they are on sale. The water tastes and smells much better so it is worth the extra cost.

among other things, from your domestic water. When it's time install a fresh filter, what should be done with the old one? Just how much lead and other toxic substances can potentially accumulate in these filters?

You can just throw it in the trash. There won't be enough lead or toxic buildup to make it hazardous.

I think you are referring to ion exchange water purifiers which remove dissolved salts. An alternative process which does the same job is reverse osmosis.
