It really depends on what your looking for and what your problems are.
You can go with a cheap $50 system for one faucet or you can spend $80,000 for a whole house system. That number really depends on the total water usage in your home.
There's a lot more info needed before I can really get you a close figure.
Also if you go with an R/O System you need to install it right. You can not have any metal pipes or fittings used.

Go to Whirlpool.com and enter your model number. You should be able to access an online how-to. If you're talking about changing a cartridge, it could be a very simple job to replace if it's showing through the grille at the bottom front. Just rotate it a quarter turn to the left (you might have to use pliers) and pull straight out. Don't be concerned about leakage, as there are o-rings. Then simply insert a new cartridge and turn one quarter clockwise. Then you have to bleed the air out of the system. Use a one or two quart container and fill it from your water dispenser. Done!

I'm looking for a water filtration solution that works as well as water distilliation -- a single unit or multiple units that remove *EVERYTHING* from the water.
I have inquired Polar Bear distillers about whether their systems could be used on a whole house and they told me that they could not -- is this true? Couldn't multiple distillers, or distillers linked to larger storage tanks be used together?
What are some of the products out there and how can these products be installed and/or linked together? Can you use a softener, a Reverse-Osmosis and a UV filter all at once, for instance? Are there systems that do all of this without having to "chain" them together?
Please do not let cost considerations inhibit replies -- I would like to know about systems in all price ranges. Thank you!
I put in a Rayne system to do just this. It can be used with a Reverse Osmosis and UV filter at the same time. They are expensive units, but mine came with a lifetime warranty. Glad it did, too, because my pressure regulator blew the tank and even though it was caused by something outside of the unit, they replaced it for free.
My plumber recently installed a water filtration system under my kitchen sink and when he left I noticed that the filter was hooked up to the hot water instead of cold. I called him and asked him what to do and he told me to shut the water off. So now I am just wondering if it has been damaged because of the hot water running through it. Thanks in advance!
LOL...cold water out of the tap can be almost 60 degrees..Hot water reaches over 100 degrees ..But yes..Hot water is not supposed to be ran through your water filteration system..It will not ruin the whole thing..Just the cartridges and paper products inside that are used for the filteration..Might swell an o ring or two..Did the Plumber include the filteration system in his price? Or was it one You ourchased then had him install it? Find the brand name of the system and google it on the night, then call thier toll free number..and get the exact info from them...

Most people would use a canister filter with all types of mechanical, chemical & biological filtration, though some solely use external filters as a biological filter.
Chemical filtration is usually through use of activated carbon or zeolite but it’s not considered essential, especially for planted tanks where you don’t want liquid fertilisers to be absorbed.
I would start with a thin filter wool pad which can be replaced or just rinsed in old tank water, this should be the only thing that needs regular attention. Then a coarse or medium sponge to catch any debris that escaped the wool. The remaining space should be filled with bio-media material to maximise biological filtration, with a well established one you never need to worry about your ammonia & nitrite levels. One of the best to use is Biohome sintered glass, far more effective than normal ceramic bio-rings or balls.
