What is the major difference between a water filter, purifier, softener or conditioner?
Dragon Humidifier

I have a private well system here in Wasilla, AK and I am not happy with the water quality. I used a shower filter to remove chlorine etc when I lived in California but that is not the problem now. The water causes dry skin, tastes horrible and seems to have a lot of calcium and iron in it. I had some tests done and was offered a Water conditioner that uses polymer beads and a seperate system that uses reverse osmosis to filter and soften all of the water in the house. This will cost around $3000 is that the best way to go or does anyone know of a better option? I do want to filter all of the water in the house for drinking, cooking, bathing laundry etc. Are there certain things I need to leave in the water for health reasons? Is it ok to strip the water of as many minerals etc as I can?

Excellent story! Here are some valuable drinking water filtration
resources you can use in the future.

Solid carbon block technology is considered the most effective method
for reducing contaminants of health concern. In addition to the
removal of cysts, a solid carbon block filter also reduces:
· chemicals; MTBE, TCE
· pesticides;
· herbicides;
· disinfections byproducts;
· heavy metals;
· cysts; Crypto bug
· asbestos
· particulates
· chlorine.
. Arsenic

How do you choose a water filter? What does the filter actually reduce
or remove? And finally what does it cost? These answers are found by
doing a little research or home work will call it. Doing such will
save you a lot of money and provide you with pure "healthy" drinking
water. The bottom line is you must get a Data Performance Sheet by the
NSF national sanitation foundation to compare filters. These "proof of
performance" sheets show exactly what the filter does and for how many
gallons. If you can't get one from the manufacturer or from who ever
is trying to sell you one, simply say no thanks!

The Importance of Certification
In the last decade, interest in home water treatment products has
grown tremendously. Unfortunately, it isn't always easy for consumers
to know whether or not a particular product will actually be as safe
and effective as the manufacturer claims at reducing various
contaminants from your water supply.
NSF has a long history of developing and running independent product
testing programs. In fact, we are the leading independent tester of
home water treatment products on the market today. With our
state-of-the-art laboratories and highly skilled staff, we have the
knowledge and expertise to effectively evaluate water treatment
products, including:
Adsorption filters (i.e. carbon, charcoal, KDF, ceramic)
Reverse osmosis systems
Water softeners
Distillation systems
Ultraviolet disinfections products.
As an added assurance for consumers, NSF requires that all products
meet annual re-certification requirements. Unannounced plant
inspections and periodic retesting of all certified products are
required of all NSF-listed companies. This unique requirement allows
us to ensure that the products we certify continue to meet all stated
requirements year after year.

Note: NSF has tested & certified over 4000 different filters. It's
important to understand we have 400 plus manufacturers of water
filters alone world wide. Having said this "why" would you purchase a
water filter that is NOT tested & certified by NSF. It all comes down
to this: Talk is cheap and facts are hard to find in the drinking
water filtration industry! NSF is were you will get the facts.

Ultimately it comes down to this: What does the filter do & how much
does it cost?

NSF Data performance sheets is were to find "what it does".
Price: For a $1.00 a week you can have pure healthy drinking water. If
you are spending "more" it's costing you too much.

Which water filter(purifier) should i take for my house?
Popular culture

Im residing in South City-2,Gurgaon, Im looking for water filter, for my house. which one shuld should i take.

What sorts of water problems do you have in your drinking water? Have you tested your water to confirm a specific contamination? Do you want to treat the whole house or just the point-of-use? Is your water supply from the public water or private well?

You need to resolve these issues in your mind before you invest in any type of filter. Not all water filters are created equal. Some fancy-looking ones may not do the job so check www.nsf.org to find out certified filters that will meet your water filtering need. Also, you read an article in the September Environmental Science & Technology (Sept 15, 2007 issue) titled "Water pitcher filters miss lead particles" to confirm my point.

Make sure what you buy is NSF-certified to treat your water the way you expect it to be. Check out the link below to Water Filters & Purifiers Guide website.

How can I make a water filter/purifier?

and 13-teen-year-olds can make.

Or at least a website that helps.
That is not pre-made

There are a few traditional ways to purify water.
1. Boil it, but you have to find a heat source.
2. Filter it, but you have to have a filter that is capable of flitering out microorganisms that are only microns in size.
3. Use Iodine tablets.
4. Use a still.....This requires some preperation. I'll set it up as a scenario where you are stuck in the woods without safe water. First, you dig a hole in the ground a foot deep, and two feet diameter. In the hole you just dug, put a cup or some other container in the center. Around the perimeter of this cup, put the impure water, or vegetation, or even urine in the most extreme cases. Now that the cup and source material are set up, place a plastic sheet over the top and secure with rocks on top of the plastic around the perimeter of the hole. Kind of like putting plastic wrap over the top of a bowl of left over mac and cheese. Now, in the middle of the plastic sheet, place a small stone or some other weight. The weight should just bring the plastic sheet to a cone shape with the point of the cone arriving just over the top of the cup in the center of the hole.

What will happen? The water laden materials that are around the center cup will give up their water as the sun beats down and heats up the air inside the plastic covered hole. This water will collect on the plastic cover. As the moisture increases, beads of water will run down the plastic, arriving at the center point of the plastic sheet (remember the weight in the center of the plastic sheet?) and fall into the cup.

The water that collects in the cup is pure enough to safely drink without worry.

Hope this helps.

  • CamelBak All Clear Water Purifier | Gear Review | Gear Junkie

It works like a bug zapper for water-borne bacteria, killing 99.99 percent of harmful critters, the company claims. The CamelBak All Clear microbiological UV water purification system uses an ultra-violet (UV) light bulb that’s said to last for more than 8,000 cycles — which the company equates to purifying three liters of water per day for 6.5 years.

The basic idea of this technology — UV light to kill bacteria — has been around for years, including in large-scale municipal water-purification facilities. In the outdoors industry, SteriPEN has several UV-based purification products.

What CamelBak offers is a convenient package. The contraption secures to a 1-liter (32-ounce) CamelBak Better Bottle. It will also fit most non-CamelBak bottles with a 63 millimeter opening. A small screen on the cap shows when the purification is done. Press a button and light floods the suspect water for 80 seconds, zapping the microbiological life to purify the water. For adventure racers or backcountry-bound backpackers, this has awesome potential.

If healthy nutrition is as important to you as it should be, you should be aware that drinking water is an integral part of it. If the water in your area is sub par consider some sort of filter. There are types that attach to your faucet or are part of a pitcher. Drinking clean water can’t be stressed enough as key to your health and well-being.

    Water is Good for You

Physicians suggest drinking no less than 8 glasses of water daily, particularly if you are engaged in physical exertion which causes sweat. Water improves your state of being by flushing out toxins. Remember, one can live without food for days but can only exist without water for one day. Keep that in mind and take measures to install a water purifier or filter in your home to make drinking more palatable.

Every one at home drinks a lot of coffee and too many sodas partially because its easy and tastes great. By having water filters/purifiers installed in your own house, you can make sure that you get purified tasty water in almost no cost. Be a role play for your kids and help them develop a good habit of drinking plenty of water.
