What can i filter water with sand and dirt with?
Golden Light (One Moment in Peace in the Middle of the Storm)

I have a science project where i need to filter water. I plan to boil it, but i can't boil it with sand and other solids. I think i can use something like coffee filters, if this is a good idea, where can i get them? from big stores like no frills loblaws etc.. if not, what do i use? where can i get?

Coffee filters would be perfect and they're cheap! You can find them at any grocery store and many discount stores.

How does a water filter with sand and rocks technically work? i'm having difficulty finding info?
waipio

I have to do a project for school in which I must make a water filter...that will eventually filter impure, dirty water (no dye). I don't really understand how it works, and maybe with that info, i'll be able to make a better filter (and also there's a section that i gotta tell a bit of the science of it)

The impurities (assuming they are particles) will get trapped in the sand as the water drains through. You will have to separate the sand from the container the water goes in with a fine mesh.

If the sand is fine enough, this should work. You don't really say what's in it making it dirty. The best thing to use for dirty water is activated charcoal. The impurities bond to the carbon atoms as they pass through.

Can I use building ( for cement ) or road constuction sand to make a sand bio water filter.?
There are some remedies Worse

I am busy making my boat as self sufficient as possible.
So I wonder what sand I need to purify rain water.
I found the blueprints, read the test results ( chemical analysis ).
It should work and be safe, but I worry about the right grain size
for the sand.

Builder's sand contains contaminants that you would not want in your purified water. I'm guessing road construction sand is similar. How about silver sand or something similar? See what your local garden center has got.

What would be a good sand filter for purifying water?
The Circle Of Life

I am taking an engineering design class and my groups responsibilities are to design a sand filter.

What would be a good sand filter to use and how would it work?

if you use diatomaceous earth instead of quartz sand it might be more efficient.

  • A Living Building - The Paramus Post

Building in this age requires addressing multiple environmental concerns. For the Omega Institute — which is a center in Rhinebeck, N.Y., specializing in holistic living — those concerns mean designing beyond conventional codes and practices. Omega Institute recently unveiled a "living building," which filters 5 million gallons of wastewater each year through an indoor marsh and outdoor wetlands.

The OCSL may be the first green building to achieve the LEED Platinum certification and meet the Living Building Challenge, which is the highest standard possible for building performance. This means that the building provides all of its own electricity and heat through geothermal wells and solar photovoltaic panels. The building is constructed of reused materials and locally sourced concrete without additives. The heart of the building is a 4,500-square-foot greenhouse containing a water filtration system called the Eco Machine. There is a concrete marsh that is 15 feet...

Cleaning (maintainence on) a (biological) slow sand filter ...

A biological sand filter (slow sand filter or Biosand filter) is maintained or cleaned by actively managing only the top 5 cm of sand. This top layer is either removed and replaced when the flow rate becomes unacceptable (typically 4 to 6 months) with clean sand or “wet harrowed” meaning the sand is gently agitated causing partial break up of the biological surface. A rapid sand filter is maintained and cleaned by forcefully injecting water backwards through the entire sand bed every 2 or 3 days. Backwashing a biological sand filter will destroy it and may result in people getting very sick if water from it is being consumed. A Frequently asked questions (FAQ) on biological sand filters can be found here.

The terminology used to describe water filters that uttilize sand and gravel to filter water can be confusing. A “slow sand filter” uses sand and biological methods to purify water. A “rapid sand filter” uses sand to filter water. Rapid sand filters do not make use of biological methods, although some biological action may take place between backwashing (cleaning). A “Biosand filter” is a modified slow sand filter, invented by Dr. David Manz. A Biosand filter uses biological and sand filtering and is designed to operate intermittantly. A “sand filter” is a general term used to refer to a water filter that uses sand as the filter media.
