I'm looking to purchase a water softener / water treatment system but i'm not fully convinced i need one. Is there a real benefit to having one? And who sells the best water softeners / water treatment systems?

Basically a whole house water treatment system processes all the water that enters your home by removing the minerals (mainly calcium and magnesium) that make it hard. Your water acquires these substances as it passes through the water cycle and ends up in the lake or ground water that serves as the course of all your water

The benefits of using such a system come in the areas of improved quality of life and economic savings. Quality of life improvements are related to the taste of food, ease of cleaning, more efficient clothes washing, and personal hygiene benefits.

People who use soft water report that food cooked in it and beverages such as juices, tea and coffee made with it simply taste better. When it comes to cleaning, soft water makes the job easier whether is it washing the dishes or cleaning the sinks taps and tubs in the home. Clothes come out looking whiter and brighter when washed in soft water and you come out of the shower or tub with smoother, softer skin and silkier, shinier hair.

The economic savings of using soft water come in three main areas. First, using soft water increases the effectiveness of all your cleaning products that are used in water such as laundry detergent, hand and body soap and dish washing liquid. This is because hard water requires more soap to clean things well. The softer the water, the less soap needed for the same or better results.

The second economic benefit of a water treatment system is that your appliances that use water will last longer. Studies have shown that soft water will increase the lifespan of dishwashers and clothes washers, facets, toilets and water heaters. Soft water also prolongs the lifespan of your clothes by up to 15 percent according to one study.

The third savings that results from treating hard water is a reduction in the amount of energy required to heat water. Over time, calcium deposits can build up on the inside of your water heater, thus reducing its efficiency. A U.S. Bureau of Standards study demonstrated that soft water can save up to 21.7% of the energy used by an electric water heater and 29.5% by a gas-fired unit.

I would like to know what equiptment is available and what is considered the most reliable.

Lots of company's make these systems. I do not know of or have any real opinion on which is best. They consist of a tank mounted under or beside your house with a filter and usually a water softener. In reality there is not allot to them so I would just go with the one I could find on sale. Changing the filters is the important part and they are not cheap. normaly have to be changed every 3months and cost $17 - $30 each.

Wanting to find a good water treatment system for the whole house?

If you are looking for a water softener, I have not found found a good one yet. I have had two "Sears" types and had problems with the regeneration system on both of them. You have to learn to deal with their regeneration systems if you buy one of them because it would be extremely expensive to call a repair man every time the regen system needs to be cleaned.

I have also had more complex problems with them that I won't detail at this time.

I thought the "Water Boss" was the solution but in doing research for this answer I found something on another site that suggested that a part in the regeneration system galls, and if it galls, repair may cost more than a new system.

I checked the regen system of "Morton" softeners, and it is exactly the same as the Sears.

Culligan costs an arm and a leg but if you want soft water at any price they will at least maintain their rental equipment. Culligan has several competitors also that I cannot remember off the top of my head. They could possibly be cheaper than Sears if you called a repair man every time it didn't work instead of figuring out how to do it yourself.

There are also many other devices for water treatment. Filters, activated carbon filters, iron removal devices, Reverse Osmosis filtration, etc.

We are on a 30 house private well, and last in line. Our water has too much Iron Sulfide in it. What to do?

We need a whole-house water treatment system, but our water is so bad most honest dealers have said it won't work.
Does anyone have super high iron sulfide levels? What do you do???

We had a Culligan water-treatment system and used something called "Iron Out" as an additive. It was effective, but the system required pretty steady maintenance. We set aside an hour a week for cleaning, refilling, etc. This was in addition to the normal maintenance the company provided. It was worth it, though to be able to have water that didn't leave rust on everything.

With Home Water Treatment System is best for you?

Water treatment, so you want a few more problems to examine the various models instead.

The price for whole house systems, ranging from $ 1000 – $ 5900, whichdig a little 'later in the comparison even more important. You might think the higher price for more power capacity will be (which means that the number of gallons will the filter before the filter must be replaced), and I do, but not enough to justify spending that much more money. System for $ 1000 had a capacity of 300,000 liters, with the filter replacement is $ 639. The most expensive has a capacity of 400,000 liters, with the substitution of a close$ 3000.

According to my calculations, I can filter 300,000 liters of the system for $ 1000 and buy a replacement filter for another 300,000 liters for a total of $ 1639, well below the original price for the top model. Considering the whole house
