How do I change my swimming pool water from Chlorine to salt water?
LurayCaverns-110

My pool is contollrd by chlorine tablets, but the water may be bad for my wife's skin. We are considering changing to salt water. <<<<<<<<<<<is this easy and is it costly?

A salt pool is just a way of generating chlorine for the water. It requires levels of salt at 3,500-4,000ppm and this water passes through a generator cell that converts the free floating chlorine ions (from the sodium chloride... salt) into hypochlorous acid (the compound in all chlorinated pools).

If your wife has a problem with chlorine then she will have a problem with a salt chlorinated pool as well unfortunately.

You can easily convert it.... stop using chlorine for 48-72 hours. Add enough salt to raise the levels to 4,000ppm. Install the generator cell between the pump and the filter. Plug it in and let it run for a few days on high settings, check the chlorine levels to ensure they are between 3-5ppm, then adjust the generator back down to maintain these levels.

You don't need the pool store to do it, you don't need special things to do it, and you still need to maintain the rest of the water chemistry... the only thing you don't have to do is maintain chlorine tablets in the water.

You have to clean the cells in weak hydrochloric acid solution periodically and this removes some of the precious metals on the cells. This means you have to replace them every couple years ($200+ depending on the type) so the cost washes out to be about the same for traditional chlorination vs salt. Initial cost can be a few thousand depending on the type you get.

How often do you have to change your pool water?

AND CAN I RENT THE EQUIPMENT TO DO IT
IN GROUND POOL SIZE 20 W 75 L 12 FT DEEP

Sounds like about the same as ours. Size and all. It depends on how long you run your filter, how many times per day you run it,how much activity the pool gets, how warm you keep it, how often it is swept and brushed, what kind of chemicals you use,if you use gas or liquid chlorine. I think I covered just about everything there. Ours is an older pool, maybe 40 years old. It has been re-plastered once. We only drain it once every five years. That is all it needs to keep it sparkling new looking, and the water clear and fresh. I have drained it eight times so far,and have never had to use anything extra to do the actual draining. I'm not sure of how new pools work, but ours has a water return jet near the top of the pool. The nozzle of that jet is made to unscrew and come off. Then I just use this adaptor that has threads on one end, and barbs on the other end. That screws right into where the return jet nozzle unscrewed from, then your vacuum hose fits onto the hose barb. Turn on the pump, and the water will drain. We have a drain not far ,that goes directly out to the street gutter. We let it run for almost one and a half days to completely drain it. You can get those adaptors from a pool supply store. Byee

how to change pool water from bacasil to chylorine?

Best way? Dump your pool. That way you'll be sure that your Baquacil reading is zip. Incidentally, dumping your pool may also be fraught with hazards, depending on the pool type. You may need to be doing this anyway, if your TDS reading is up. Best bet? Get a pro in to assess it. There are other ways to do it such as the one mentioned here: http://searchwarp.com/swa32658.htm but I'm always in favour of a better safe than sorry approach.

How often should I change water in ducks pool?
Melt Pool

Stinky, yucky water. Also, how do I keep it clean without having to dump it everday?
I have two ducks. There pool is a small kiddie pool. There water smells bad everyday.

Duck are amazing - they always output more than they input. I had them for years and that was the one thing they always did..poo in the pool.
Depending on the number of ducks depends on how often you need to clean it - when the water starts to smell its to late. Maybe every 3wks, it really depends on the quantity of ducks.
The biggest danger with not cleaning it, on a fairly regular basis is disease problems. Po and Water and all that goes with it.
Easiest way to clean the pool is, if you have the luxury of a pump extract all the water and then shovel up the waste from the bottom.
Failing no pump use the syphon method - I found this to be great as it pulled alot of the gunk with it. Get a hose and hold the two ends in one hand - now fill the hose with a jug of water until you can see it at both ends - now put your thumb on one end and drape the other end to a point lower in your garden than the base of the pool. Now still with your thumb over the other end insert it into the pool of water and let go - don't let this end come above the water level - all water and alot of the gunk will pour away out of the pond via the hose.
**UPDATE**
A small kiddies pool is very small for two ducks - try a slight modification in their diet if they really are that awful bad. I used to feed our brown loaf bread, pinhead oatmeal, whole meal. Make sure its well mashed up and quite wet. My ducks lived for 15years!!!
Also make sure they have enough space to roam around outside the pool - they love nothing more than to rummage in soft soil for worms, grubs, grass etc.
Good luck.

Open Water Training in Your Pool - Competitor.com

Flip at the T :  During a normal swim set, every wall is a chance to rest, relax and recover before the next lap. However, there are no walls every 25 or 50 meters in the open water. One way to prepare yourself is by doing a long swim (500 to 1000 meters) without touching the wall. Instead of turning at the wall and pushing off with your legs, flip at the T, or five feet before the wall. You will lose all of your forward momentum and be forced to use your arms and legs to get moving again. Caution: This can be stressful on your shoulders. As with all activities, don’t overdo it.

Sight Your Coach :  During my first few months as a swim coach, I discovered why coaches always pace along the pool deck. Usually it is to communicate with swimmers in other lanes, but sometimes it’s just to keep warm or for personal entertainment. Use this random movement to your advantage: Pretend your coach is a big, orange inflated buoy. Practice sighting for your coach during a drill set. Lift your head forward, scan the horizon for the coach/buoy, turn your head to the side for a breath and then continue swimming. Do this no more than five times per lap (25 yards).

Ohio Records First Human Case Of West Nile Virus, Disease and ...

Ohio’s first probable human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in 2009 was recorded today by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), which also reported a sharp increase in the number of WNV-positive mosquitoes.

The patient, an 11-year-old male from Cuyahoga County, is recovering. Meanwhile, the number of WNV-positive mosquito pools in the State of Ohio nearly doubled in the past week to 97.

Because humans can get WNV only from the bite of an infected mosquito, ODH reminds Ohioans to take steps to help prevent infection.

“Unfortunately, West Nile is endemic in Ohio,” said ODH Director Alvin D. Jackson, M.D. “Fortunately, however, it can be reduced and prevented by taking some simple, proactive steps.”

To avoid possible infection from mosquito bites: If you are outdoors between dusk and dawn when

mosquitoes are most active, be sure to wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, shoes and socks. Light colors are least attractive to mosquitoes. Use insect repellent and follow the label directions.
