I just bought a 4 foot above ground pool I'm just not sure what chemicals to use to get the water clear, since I have rusty hard water.
Take a water sample to your pool supply store and they can tell what you need.

I have had water tested constantly at shop all levels are good - my water can be crystal clear but when I put the chlorine in it only takes a few minutes and the pool looks like milk and doesn't clear for a few days again. The pool shop have no idea.
If you are using HTH (clorinated calcium) Your filter may be
shot and allowing the calcium to get back in the pool and may
make the water cloudy until it settles on the bottom. If so, the
filter needs to be repaired or replaced. Try using Dichlor
(clorinated cyanuric acid with a PH of 6) If it still does that then
I would dump half the water and refill. Dichlor is a superior
product anyway. Once stabilized - you dont have to add anything
else, like acid and stay away from algaecides - they just pollute
the water and are unnecessary. By the way, backflush your
filter every couple of weeks or so.

I keep my chemical levels in good range everyday. When the pool filter (cartridge) is running, the water is blue but not clear (cannot see the bottom). When I turn off the filter and leave it off for a couple of days or more, the water stays blue and I can see the whole bottom of the pool. So I just turn filter on only when I need to add chlorine. Then water isn't clear after that. Do I need to buy new cartridges?
probably dirt dust.ect it blows out into the pool and makes it dirty.Just change the filter

This is the first year that we have had a pool. We have only had it for a week and we have shocked it and added clarifier but the water will not clear up. The pH is 7.4 which is pretty balanced. My children are going crazy because they want to swim, can someone help?
You might have an algae problem if the water looks too green. Then you need to scrub the bottom and skim the top.
Our pool water was really, really green because our pool cover ripped halfway through the winter. Then we took the cover off and after a few days it had a greenish blue tint to it. Last night we put 4 gallons of liquid chlorine in it and ran the filter all night long and backwashed it every 3-4 hours. This morning it is a blue color. Now how do I get it clear? I have no idea what is next. Thanks in advance.
Ok, to be truly honest you have no idea what kind of issues you are dealing with until you get the pool water tested. You can see the blue/green algae but you calcium levels, hardness etc are all probably whacked out and to get this balance you need to test. take a jar of your pool water and go to home depot. They have a pool water testing machine- follow the instructions, enter all your answers and the machine will print out what is wrong and how much of every chemical you need and how to fix this :) happy swimming!
