Above ground pool steps--can I use water instead of sand to hold down my new pool steps?
Bahamas

I'm hoping to be able to use water instead of sand as ballast so I can remove the steps easier for winterization. I also worry about the sand escaping from the steps into the pool water. Steps are Confer Step-1 brand. Thanks!

You'll need to use the sand because it's heavier than water. That will keep the pool steps from floating.

How should I go about converting my chlorine pool to a salt water pool? I do want new equip. General cost?
Bahamas

My pool equipment is old and I am replacing it continually. I would like to replace it all at once and, in the process, convert to salt water. I have no idea what this will cost, nor who to call.

Most inground salt units retail for about $1200- $1400, including salt and installation. Don't get fooled into thinking you can save a boat load of cash by purchasing a salt unit for an above ground (unless this is an above ground we're talking about) to use for an inground pool. The unit's output won't suffice. Purchase a unit that will deal with your pool volume.
Any reputable pool shop with a service department will be able to handle this for you.
If you're somewhat handy, it's actually a project you can do yourself. It involves minor electrical and plumbing for the control box, the cell and the sensor. The actual changeover to salt water is easy as well, since it simply involves calculating approximately your pool volume, purchasing the salt required and dissolving it in the pool.
DIY will save you about 200 bucks on average in installation labour.
Choosing to go salt, although expensive at first, saves enough money in chemicals no longer needed, that it will actually pay for itself in about 5 seasons or less on average. Much better water quality as well. Good choice.

im a new pool owner what do i need to put in my new pool water so my kids can swim?
Delicious

i am having water delivered towmarro and i need to know what to get at the pool store. i need names of what i need, and i know there as to be more then chlorine you put in it

Start with a shark. That'll take care of those kids right away.

Seriously, I think you should go to a store that sells pool supplies. They can tell you what you need and advise you on how much of the chemicals you need to put in based on the size (in gallons) of your pool.

when i put the chemicals in my new pool the water turned brown. all levels are ok. is this safe to swim in?
Miami

all the chemical levels in the pool are within normal ranges. is this water safe to swim in?

It's probably a metal reaction. Have a pool store test for metals and follow their advice.

New inground pool owners, what did it cost to fill your pool with water?
Pizza

I am thinking of putting in an inground pool and don't want to be blind-sided by the cost of filling the pool. What was the capacity of your pool? Did you have to pay an added sewage charge? Is there a cheaper way (water haulers rather than tap water)?

I had a 15,000 gallon pool in KY which was cheaper to fill with an independent water hauler than to use the city's water. Water there was REALLY expensive and it would have cost double the $250 I paid to have it trucked in and filled. Now I'm in CA, you call the water department and tell them when exactly you are filling the pool and they won't charge you sewage. For 12,000 gallons I paid $97.06

Mosquito Pool Tests Positive for EEE | Madison County Courier ...

Mosquito Pool Tests Positive for EEE

Madison County Public Health Director, Eric Faisst, MPH announced today that a mosquito pool collected on August 24 has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE).

The pool of Culiseta melanura mosquitoes was from a trap located off Smith Ridge Road in the Town of Sullivan.  This type of mosquito is primarily a bird-biting mosquito.  Results were received from the New York State Health Department late yesterday.

This is the first mosquito pool collected from Madison County that has tested positive for EEE this summer.

Mosquito populations are declining due to the cooler evening temperatures and no aerial spraying is expected at this time.  Surveillance activities by the Environmental Health Department will continue, and actions to further control the spread of EEE will be taken only if deemed necessary and after consultation with the New York State Department of Health.

The Weber Family Blog: Our new pool!!!

They have two water slides which they let anyone go on (so Ellie and Owen can go on these no problem, the life guards are so lax that they would probably let us throw Mags down by herself-- scary, I know).  Owen will occasionally go down the enclosed slide but usually says it is too scary (it is)... Ellie will go down anything! We really are loving this pool, but unfortunately with school starting, they've closed it down.  It will be open for two more weekends before it closes for good until next summer.  We are SOOOO sad about this as we only really got to enjoy it for a week.  The kids are going to be incredibly disapointed.  Next year.... Daniel is a graduate student in Chemical Engineering attending the University of Texas at Austin. Erin is a busy stay-at-home mom taking care of Elise, Owen, and Magdalyn full time. Elise is our precocious but smart four...
