I had my water checked today and the results where the best. My alkalinity was 234ppm my ph was 7.37 my hardness was 135 and my bromine was 0 . I have a 18x32 above ground pool. They suggested I had 10 lb of ph reducer and 10 pounds of hardener both 3-4lb at a time waiting 3-4 hour apart and 2 lb shock. I added 4 lb of ph reducer and my ph is now down to 6.8 and I still have 0 bromine. does there suggestion's sound correct or am I going to have a worse problem if my ph drops to low. My water is a little cloudy but I can see through it no problem.

Ideal levels for a pool chemistry are:
pH 7.4-7.6
Total alkalinity 80-150ppm (so your alk is way to high)
Calcium Hardness- 200-400ppm
Your pool sanitizer should be between 1 and 5ppm.

Bring your alkalinity down. Then test all chems again. If hardness needs to be brought up still then do that. Check bromine level and raise appropriately. You must have sanitizer in the pool.

How can I clear up rusty pool water?

I recently just bought a easy set up pool. I filled it up with the garden hose (850 gallons worth) and We have very hard water, so its a rust color. How can I get the rust look out of the water and get it clear? Should I put the chlorine tablets and shock it now or wait for an analysis of the water? This is my first time ever setting up a pool. Usually my daughter just ran through the sprinkler:) Me and my great ideas.

Get your water analyzed at a pool supply center. They have products that will neutralize metal in the water. You will receive a computerized printout on what chemicals to put in your water and how much. Make sure you know how much water your pool holds before going there. There will be easy instructions that come with the analysis to show you the steps needed to get your pool water clear and balanced.

Filled our newly painted pool with water from a spring and rain water is this a problem?

Thought we would "go green" and filled our newly painted swimming pool with water from a spring and rain water and of course the pool is green. We have not started the filter yet and I will take a water sample to the pool store for analysis but is this really a bad idea? My family wants me to empty the pool and start over again with city water. We have had a lot of rain and overcast weather lately and some conventional pools I have seen are also green. Help?

You are fine with rain water. It isn't ideal but can certainly be worked properly. One of the things that rain water has over city water is that it's generally a lot softer. This means you can start right on some of the chemicals and add what's needed instead of trying to get rid of what's not.

One thing that rain water will contain is phosphates. This is one of the reasons for the algae bloom in the water. Phosphates are a natural pollutant and a man made pollutant that is introduced into pools through rain. Starting with rain water just means you need to get rid of the phosphates.

Baking soda will raise your alkalinity. 20 Mule Team borax will raise and buffer your pH. Household bleach will raise the chlorine level and will also raise the pH.

Take a sample of the water down to your pool store and have them run a full spectrum test on it. Make sure they test for the following:
Total chlorine
Free chlorine
Combined chlorine
pH
Alkalinity
Hardness
Cyanuric acid
Total dissolved solids
Metals
Phosphates

Don't purchase anything from the pool store at this time unless you have any phosphates or metals in the water. If you do then purchase a phosphate remover (PhosFree, etc) and a metal sequestering agent. Bring the results and recommendations back and post them here or feel free to email them to me at robandliz1992@yahoo.com and we'll get you on the right track. Please include the pool gallon size, material it's made of (concrete/plaster or vinyl lined), filtration system, chlorination system, and any chemicals you may have added in the last couple weeks.

Chemical Test for Pool Water?

I want to do a detail analysis of the pool water and want to see where I can have it done. I'm not talking about Ph, Chlorine or alkaline level. I want to see what else in the water as I have been having some run-off into the pool.

Green Pool Help! NO ALGAE AND NO METALS. TURNS GREEN WHEN WE ADD CHLORINE.?

What do you prefer? I prefer a clean, healthy freshwater Lake as far North as 5th Avenue.

Unfortunately in life, as my mother always said, we don’t always get what we want. Or prefer. I define a lake as a healthy body of freshwater that I can swim, boat, and recreate in. The best available science indicates that even with significant upstream improvements to benefit water quality, and even with improvements in the lake basin itself to control stormwater runoff, we will still be plagued into perpetuity with fecal coliform, phosphorous/nitrogen, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, and other water quality issues.

This means there will never be swimming, extremely limited boating. Noxious weeds like Purple Loosestrife and Eurasian Milfoil. Algae blooms. Nutria to manage. Signs around the lake telling people not to go near or touch the water. In essence- an unattractive, unappealing, and unsafe freshwater stagnant pool. A dammed river. That’s not a lake. And certainly not what anyway envisioned for the Gateway to the Capitol Campus.

Jumping into the Pool before You Know the Water Depth

People initiate satisfaction and loyalty tracking programs for one simple reason – they want to know what their customers think.  Maybe about their company, their products, their services or their perceived value being delivered to customers.  But, while they may suspect the answers, they are uncertain and therefore they seek the  Voice of their Customer . This represents real progress. Once they decide to kick-off a survey program, they frequently begin to immediately craft the questions.  This is where I get very concerned.  The process owners acknowledge that they don’t know what their customers are thinking, but they consciously or unconsciously believe they know what’s important to the customer base.  Sounds to me like a case of not knowing what you don’t know!   The cheap and cheerful way – Identify a reasonable number of customers...
