We are getting ready to fill our new pool with water from our own well. We have a water softener and in the past we noticed that the chemicals turn the water red for about 2 weeks, until the filter gets it clean. We have a larger pool that will be set up all year now and I am looking for some advice on what to use for nice clear water and something not to expensive. Any advice on pool maintenance in general is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
First- BEFORE YOU FILL FROM A WELL- have the water tested- pH, TA, CH, and metals. Well water often contains high calcium levels and stain producing minerals- these minerals could be causing the red you see (manganese). Get it tested for iron, copper, and manganese. If these are present and your CH is 300+ I would strongly advise you to consider having water trucked in.
Chemicals you need at the cheapest price:
Chlorine- you can use regular unscented 6% clorox bleach. It contains the same active ingredient as chlorinating liquid (sodium chloride). The only difference is chlorinating liquid is 12%.
pH increaser- 20 mule team borax found in the laundry detergent aisle
ph decreser- muriatic acid- found at any hardware store in gallon jugs
TA increaser- regular arm and hammer baking soda
TA decreaser- muriatic acid
CH increaser- calcium chloride- found at home depot/lowes
CYA- cyanuric acid- only time you may need to go to the pool store
Make sure you get a good liquid test kit. I use the Taylor K 2006. It is very accurate and reliable.

I just moved into a new home and i'm still learning on pool maintenance. I just started filling my pool with water and the water is really blue. The pool is a built in pool. I haven't added any chemicals yet. Is the pool safe to go in or should I add chemicals first before going straight in after its filled?
first add stableizer/conditioner then wait 24 hours then add clorine.if you still have problems email me at JLDAILEY2000@YAHOO.COM i own the company

I am looking to lease a home with an in ground pool and I would like some advice from pool owners. How much per gallon did you pay for your bulk water, I know it fluctuates depending on region, I'm in the midwest, but Id like an idea of what others pay. Also do you hire a company to do the weekly maintenance or do you do the chemicals yourself, which do you find to be more cost effective? Any other advice for keeping pool maintenance costs down are appreciated.
In Southern Arizona, bulk water delivery is charged at a penny a gallon and $95 per hour for the water truck. The last pool I designed and had to be filled that way ended up running around $850 for 13,000 gallons.
It is always cheaper to do it yourself, but you have to be honest with yourself as to whether or not you feel like you can keep on top of the maintenance. If you 'let the pool go' and let the chemistry get out of whack, you can damage the equipment or the interior surface, which cost a heck of a lot more than pool service.
Again, using southern AZ as a guide, you can expect to pay from $50-$125 per month on a service, which includes chemicals. The variance in price is because some services are water chemistry only, and do not perform other maintenance services like cleaning filters, salt cels (if you have one) and so on.
Maintaining a pool is a lot like maintaining a car - you can skip oil changes and not check the air pressure in the tires and save a little, or you can buy tires more often and replace the engine at 60,000 miles.
I have a 18 ft. x 4 ft. pop-up pool. We put it up this weekend. I added 1/5 of a gallon of algaecide as preventative maintenance, added 1 inch chlorine tablets in the cartridge filter, and I also used one packet of shock treatment to prepare the water. Are these amounts enough for a pool of this size? I tested the pH and I think I have to raise it. Any other preventative maintenance tips? Last year I had a heck of a time keeping it clear and want to make sure the pool doesn't turn out like that again. Thanks for your help.
Well first off you need to get exact readings of your water chemistry. Without accurate readings it's a guessing game. You can take a sample of the water down to your local pool store and they will test it for you, then post the results back here.
Unfortunately the way your question there isn't enough information to make a 100% accurate suggestion on what you need to do to the pool.

Salt Water Swimming Pool Maintenance
For standards pools, maintaining chlorine levels requires the regular addition of chlorine chemicals to the water. In a salt water pool, the chlorine generator generates the chlorine constantly so it doesn’t have to be stabilized. Chlorine generators have been used for many years and have some benefits for pool owners:
Don’t have to buy chlorine chemicals Less worry about algae forming in the pool Keep water balanced constantly Prevent much of the scum from forming at the waterline Water has no chloramines Chlorine produced is easier on the skin – less damagingSalt water swimming pool maintenance is reduced as a result of the chlorine generated by the equipment. With less scum and algae build-up, it’s easier to keep water clear and clean. It’s also easier to keep the pool walls and waterline free of scum. Because chlorine is always being formed by the generator, the water stays balanced and sanitized.
The chlorine generator keeps pool water sanitized by transforming the salt water into hypochlorous acid. This is the sanitizer itself. The result is you don’t have to buy chlorine or sanitizing chemicals. The natural formation of chlorine is easier on the skin and the clothes. Salt water swimming pool maintenance is concerned more with equipment maintenance then it is with water balance.

On a hot and humid August day, nothing feels better than a dip in the pool . But, if the pool is looking more like a tepid pond instead of an oasis of crystal clear water, nobody’s happy. Here are a few swimming pool maintenance tips to help you ensure that your pool is ready to quell the heat when you need it most.
For the cleanest water, the pool filter should run 24 hours a day. But, some may not want to have that impact on their electric bill, so, at the very least; the filter should be run eight to ten hours per day, preferably during the daytime hours. If you have a skimmer basket, check it daily and remove any collected leaves or debris to keep it operating at peak performance. Chlorine should be added to the pool...
