What are the benefits of a salt-water swimming pool?
I miss this.

I received an email from a new community pool opening in Atlanta stating the pool will be a salt-water pool. I've never heard of that before. Is this a new trend?

It's not really new, it just being marketed better the last few years.
In a nut shell a salt water pool has a salinity of between 2500- 3200 ppm. Hardly enough to be able to taste the salt in the water. Contrary to popular belief, you won't float higher than in a traditionally sanitized pool. The salt level just isn't high enough.
The salt's job is to turn into a sanitizer.
The pool water is pumped through the filtration system and heater. It then gets to the salt generator sensors and the actual cell that does the work. The salt in the water is turned into chlorine as it passes plates in the cell by electrolysis. Yep, chlorine is actually a type of salt. This then goes out to the pool and does the job of sanitizing. When it's oxidized an organic, it turns back to normal salt again and the entire process gets repeated.
These systems are actually pretty popular in new pool construction these days with about 40% of residential pools putting them in. They make the water a little softer and tend not to be so harsh on some people's skin and eyes as a traditionally sanitized pool. They can also be a heck of a lot cheaper to run than traditional methods although their initial cost is high it can usually be re couped in chemical savings after 3 years or so.

How to ensure swimming pool has enough water for the pool filter to function optimally when on long holiday?
Y.M.C.A.

I am going on a 2-month overseas holiday and am concerned that my swimming pool water might fall below the optimal level (through evaporation) for the pool filter/pump to effectively clean the water.

Apart from spending money to get a pool cover to reduce the rate of water loss through evaporation, I am interested to find out any other practical ways to automatically top up the pool (without human intervention) when I am away.

Tough one......can't you have someone top it off once a week when they are checking the house?

Good Luck!

I have a above ground swimming pool and the water has turned white. A fine film covers the bottom.filter 24/7?
Into the mystic

Abopve ground swimming pool. Water is turned white. Filter running 24/7.m Cleaning filter all the time. Fine film of silt??? on floor of pool but i keep sweeping pool and raising it off floor but hardly any difference.
It is chlorine pool(granular)
Wondering how to clean. Pool vacumm not doing anything.

It sounds like your pool Pump is not working. How old is your pool? I have owned an above ground pool and an inground pool and one thing i have learned about them both is, if you are maintaining Chemicals correctly and its still not cleaning, your pump is gone..I have also found out that an Automatic Chlorinator is the best thing you can buy for your swimming pool. Once a week all you do is add the Chemicals, usually the tablets, and it will do the rest for you. I had to hardly do any cleaning after I had it installed.

How do I stop my dogs from drinking swimming pool water?
at the pool

My three basset hounds keep drinking water out of our swimming pool. They have fresh water, but they seem to like the pool water better. We have tried everything we can think of... we put an extra bowl out by the pool... and everything but they still drink out of the pool... I know that the clorinated water cannot be good for them... any advice on making them stop?

My dog did this quite a bit too. I finally realized that it wasn't the water itself, but the sound of the water he was attracted to. (ie the water lapping against the side of the pool, flowing in and out of filters, etc.). I found an inexpensive water fountain at a local pet store and put it out near the pool. He didn't drink out of the pool anymore after that. It might be worth a try so your pups don't fall in!

  • How Much Water Should Be In A Swimming Pool?

I read with interest your website on How Much Water Should Be In A Swimming Pool? and Chlorinated Swimming Pools Can Cause Asthma In Swimmers

I do have a zero entry pool with a pool cover. Water continuously overflows the edge to keep the water “pure”. It has a ten year old ozone system. Should I look for an updated system. My pool maintenance company is using some chlorine which I do not like, but he claims that the water still needs it to be totally clean. What do you think and recommend? Should I not cover my zero entry pool with the cover that the water can flow more easily into the gutter to the filter.

Thank you so much in advance!

Study Finds Chlorinated Pool Water May Increase Allergy and Asthma ...

) — Swimming in pools disinfected with chlorine may increase the odds that a child will develop asthma or allergies, new research suggests.

The study found that teenagers who spent more than 1,000 hours swimming in chlorinated pools, either indoors or outdoors, had more than eight times the risk of having asthma than did teens who primarily swam in pools using a copper-silver disinfecting method .

“Chlorinated pool attendance has a very significant impact on the prevalence of allergic diseases in the studied population,” said lead author Alfred Bernard, a professor of toxicology and research director at Catholic University of Louvain in Brussels, Belgium. (

Does this mean all pool owners with chlorinated ought to run out into their backyards, drain their pools, and/or toss in a few pounds of chlorine neutralizer ? ABSOLUTELY NOT!
