I received an email from a new community pool opening in Atlanta stating the pool will be a salt-water pool. I've never heard of that before. Is this a new trend?
It's not really new, it just being marketed better the last few years.
In a nut shell a salt water pool has a salinity of between 2500- 3200 ppm. Hardly enough to be able to taste the salt in the water. Contrary to popular belief, you won't float higher than in a traditionally sanitized pool. The salt level just isn't high enough.
The salt's job is to turn into a sanitizer.
The pool water is pumped through the filtration system and heater. It then gets to the salt generator sensors and the actual cell that does the work. The salt in the water is turned into chlorine as it passes plates in the cell by electrolysis. Yep, chlorine is actually a type of salt. This then goes out to the pool and does the job of sanitizing. When it's oxidized an organic, it turns back to normal salt again and the entire process gets repeated.
These systems are actually pretty popular in new pool construction these days with about 40% of residential pools putting them in. They make the water a little softer and tend not to be so harsh on some people's skin and eyes as a traditionally sanitized pool. They can also be a heck of a lot cheaper to run than traditional methods although their initial cost is high it can usually be re couped in chemical savings after 3 years or so.

I am going on a 2-month overseas holiday and am concerned that my swimming pool water might fall below the optimal level (through evaporation) for the pool filter/pump to effectively clean the water.
Apart from spending money to get a pool cover to reduce the rate of water loss through evaporation, I am interested to find out any other practical ways to automatically top up the pool (without human intervention) when I am away.
Tough one......can't you have someone top it off once a week when they are checking the house?
Good Luck!
Fast, easy, reliable onsite environmental testing
Simply dip into a sample or hold under a liquid stream; for most products, in one minute or less, results are available to compare with the color chart included on the bottle's label
AquaChek multiparameter strips perform five water quality tests at once: Free Chlorine (0-4ppm), Total Chlorine (0-10ppm), Total Hardness (0-425ppm, 0-25 gr./gal.), Total Alkalinity (as CaCO3, 0-240ppm), pH (6.4-8.8)
Abopve ground swimming pool. Water is turned white. Filter running 24/7.m Cleaning filter all the time. Fine film of silt??? on floor of pool but i keep sweeping pool and raising it off floor but hardly any difference.
It is chlorine pool(granular)
Wondering how to clean. Pool vacumm not doing anything.
It sounds like your pool Pump is not working. How old is your pool? I have owned an above ground pool and an inground pool and one thing i have learned about them both is, if you are maintaining Chemicals correctly and its still not cleaning, your pump is gone..I have also found out that an Automatic Chlorinator is the best thing you can buy for your swimming pool. Once a week all you do is add the Chemicals, usually the tablets, and it will do the rest for you. I had to hardly do any cleaning after I had it installed.

My three basset hounds keep drinking water out of our swimming pool. They have fresh water, but they seem to like the pool water better. We have tried everything we can think of... we put an extra bowl out by the pool... and everything but they still drink out of the pool... I know that the clorinated water cannot be good for them... any advice on making them stop?
My dog did this quite a bit too. I finally realized that it wasn't the water itself, but the sound of the water he was attracted to. (ie the water lapping against the side of the pool, flowing in and out of filters, etc.). I found an inexpensive water fountain at a local pet store and put it out near the pool. He didn't drink out of the pool anymore after that. It might be worth a try so your pups don't fall in!

Amity University student drowns in college swimming pool
Justine John Xavier, a first year B. Tech student of Amity Institute of Space Science & Technology, had gone for his regular swimming session at about 8 a.m. in the college swimming pool. Within minutes, Justine was drowned, police said.
According to college authorities, swimming is allowed for the hostellers in two sessions - between 7-8 a.m. and 8-9 a.m. Justine used to come for swimming in the second slot.
Justine belonged to Kerala and was an expert swimmer. He was not a beginner. He was 6 ft tall and the college pool was just 4 ft deep. It is very strange that a tall boy like him can drown in shallow waters of merely 4 ft, institute Director V.P. Sandlas said.
At the time he drowned, there were nine other students - all hostellers - swimming in the same pool. There were four life guards deployed at the pool for the students’ safety. We are wondering how a good swimmer like him drowned in these circumstances almost instantly, he said.
...Reach Upward: My City#39;s Municipal Swimming Pool Debate
There has been a debate running for about a decade in my city about the municipal swimming facility. Some residents recently expressed their chagrin with a tax increase that they nail on the pool (see St-Ex article ). It seems to me that the issues at stake are usually muddled together. This lack of clarity limits the usefulness of the debate. I think that teasing the issues apart would help the debate. As I see it, the main issues are: Some residents feel that city government has no business being involved in a water recreation facility. They feel that recreation of this nature should be handled privately rather than at the taxpayers’ expense. In their mind, no one has a right to force his neighbor to pay for his own recreation. Some residents feel that the city can’t afford a swimming recreation facility. They want the city to be more fiscally responsible. Some residents feel that city officials made an end run around the wishes of voters in constructing a new water recreation...
