As much as I love swimming pools, I really dislike the chlorine smell most of them have. I suppose the chemicals are necessary in order to keep the pool and the water hygienically sound, but what if sea water was used instead, and simply replaced more often?
Wouldn't that require a lot less treatment?
I am thinking about places like the Middle East and Australia now, which tend to have pools, but little water.
A salt water pool indeed requires less to no chemistry at all.
The most important thing is to exchange the water constantly through a system of special filters.
Friends of mine operate one in France and are very happy with it.
I used it last year and it was fantastic.
They even heat it up to 25°C ;-)
They filled a pool with a mix of cornstarch and water made on a concrete mixer truck. It becomes a non-newtonian fluid. When stress is applied to ...
I want to build a salt water pool chlorinator for a school project it doesn't need to have the measuring functions just be able to change Salt to chlor . Can anybody tell me about the Voltage or the Current that i have to use to make the Silver&Copper to produce ions. And what kind of measuring to see how much salt was in the water before and how much chlor after is in would be best.
Thanks you for you answers.
titanium plates 1/16" thick about 1/8" apart with 24 volts andsalt levls of 3000 ppm with water flow should produce chlorine
I received an email from a new community pool opening in Atlanta stating the pool will be a salt-water pool. I've never heard of that before. Is this a new trend?
It's not really new, it just being marketed better the last few years.
In a nut shell a salt water pool has a salinity of between 2500- 3200 ppm. Hardly enough to be able to taste the salt in the water. Contrary to popular belief, you won't float higher than in a traditionally sanitized pool. The salt level just isn't high enough.
The salt's job is to turn into a sanitizer.
The pool water is pumped through the filtration system and heater. It then gets to the salt generator sensors and the actual cell that does the work. The salt in the water is turned into chlorine as it passes plates in the cell by electrolysis. Yep, chlorine is actually a type of salt. This then goes out to the pool and does the job of sanitizing. When it's oxidized an organic, it turns back to normal salt again and the entire process gets repeated.
These systems are actually pretty popular in new pool construction these days with about 40% of residential pools putting them in. They make the water a little softer and tend not to be so harsh on some people's skin and eyes as a traditionally sanitized pool. They can also be a heck of a lot cheaper to run than traditional methods although their initial cost is high it can usually be re couped in chemical savings after 3 years or so.

My girlfriend and I were in a salt water pool and started rubbing against each other, pelvis to pelvis, both of us with swim suits on. Obviously I'm concerned because I released into the pool while we were messing around. Is it possible for the sperm to survive in the salt water pool long enough to find its way through both of our polyester swim suits and up into her virgin body to fertilize her egg? Please no rude comments..I've heard of it happening and just want to make sure. Thank You.
No. You may have "heard of it happening", but it has never in fact happened. Not to a virgin, not to anybody. Not in a saltwater pool, not in a chlorinated pool, not in a river, lake, or ocean, not in a bathtub or hot tub. Sperm die in water even faster than they do in air.
But if you'd had sex in the pool, the answer would be different.
I just bought a house with a built in pool, I am going to convert it to salt water. Everyone seems to tell me it is much less expensive to maintain than a chlorine system.
Is this correct?
What would it cost monthly to maintain the salt water pool system?
A salt water pool has a device that electrically converts salt added to the water into chlorine bleach.
Maintaining a salt water pool can be cheaper in the very very long run. However, the initial start up costs will be a lot and it will take several years before you begin saving money. Aside from the periodic addition of salt, the rest of the chemical balance is the same. You maintain the proper chlorine levels by setting the salt water generators to the setting you want. To superchlorinate/shock the pool you simply crank the dial for a period of time. Because the salt water generator makes bleach, you will need to keep an eye on the pH levels as they will migrate upwards over time.
Installation of the salt water generators will cost about $1000 for the units, add labor and other supplemental plumbing parts. Finally, the pool will require a significant amount of salt to allow the generator to function properly. Basically, look to spend several thousand dollars initially.
Young Drowning Victim #39;Liked Trampolines But Hated Water#39;
Nearly every weekend during pool season, there is news of accidental drownings. Most involve children under age 5. Despite the statistics and an awareness that these mostly preventable tragedies continue to occur, it's still difficult to learn of another drowning.
This particular incident has a distressing twist. Lucie Marke, 2, of Elgin, Moray, Scotland, and her parents were attending a barbecue at the RAF Akrotiri in southwest Cyprus, where her father, Corporal Stephen Marke, was stationed at the time. Lucie played with the other children, and her mother, Stacey, says she checked on the toddler every 5-10 minutes. When Stacey couldn't find her daughter, the party hostess suggested looking near the pool, which was covered. Noticing a 12-inch-diameter tear in the pool cover, they ripped it off and found Lucie's lifeless body floating in two feet of water.
At an inquest this week in Scotland -- more than a year after the tragedy -- coroners ruled that the death was accidental.

Contribute to your summer fun? Whether or not the subject of chemistry “floats your boat,” chlorine chemistry can help provide a healthy swimming pool in which to float, well…your yellow ducky tube. Just as chlorine chemistry contributes to public health through its role in providing clean drinking water , it also plays an essential role in pool and spa disinfection.
Most people know that chlorine disinfectants are added to pool water to destroy a wide assortment of germs that can make swimmers sick. Chlorine helps control germs that cause recreational water illnesses, known as “RWIs,” including diarrhea, swimmer’s ear and skin infections.
Chlorine is a bit of a misunderstood player on the pool scene, however. Although it is appropriately associated with a healthy swimming experience, chlorine also has an undeserved reputation for causing occasional red eyes and irritated skin. While the irritation noticed by swimmers is very real, chlorine itself is usually not the culprit—it is part of the solution. A brief introduction to chlorine pool chemistry will dispel this poolside myth, and enhance your ability to evaluate your swimming pool environment.
