I want to add a water softener to my home for obvious reasons. My home is 15 years old with no softener ever being installed.

Bill2006 is correct about the pipes. However, hard water deposits WILL affect the plumbing fixtures. The deposits can clog the aerators on faucets and clog openings in shower heads, etc. Household vinegar usually disolves them. Go with your plan for the water softener and clean up all the faucets and shower heads in your home for added water flow and efficiency.

I'm from Buffalo, NY and I am very interested in getting a water softening and/or purification system for my house. I am not exactly a "handy man" so I was hoping to dish our the extra money and buy the products/services through a company rather than doing it myself. I've heard a few good things about several companies but I want to hear what you all think.

I have a Rayne system that runs on potassium rather than salt and I love it. We have very hard water and it works very well to keep our pipes running smoothly as compared to our neighbors without a system. Plus, it came with a lifetime warranty which they stand behind. Last year our pressure regulator blew and it blew the tank. Even though it was a problem cause by our plumbing, they came out, replaced the tank and re-plumbed the system. I also like the fact that the system is completely automatic, you set it once and it does all of the work itself. It only backwashes when it is necessary and adjusts to the actual amount of water used so it saves water, too.

Salt pellets for water conditioners are the best. If you have a high iron content , there are special salt pellets that will help maintain the resin inside your unit from getting hard.

While livestock salt block and rock salt will satisfy the needs of the conditioner, it contains high amounts of impurities like plain old dirt. This will add to eventual service problems as the brine tank accumulates a layer of mud/dirt in the bottom. Also,,,careful not to buy heavier bags than you can carry,,,80lb bags are cheap all right,,,but are a pain in the ,,,,back!

i heard that because we put more salt in water softener is that correct?
every time we take a shower it's like we never washed ourself !!

To much salt for the amount of water you are using. Lower your levels or reset your timers to less cycles per week

the newer model water softeners only add the water when they start their regeneration cycles.
