I checked the softener and it does have salt in it currently. The water also smells like rotten eggs... if that helps.
How old is your water heater?
The one time I noticed having brownish water, I later found out the water heater liner had rotted and I needed a new water heater. Have you also noticed that your clothes haven't been coming out as white as they could be?

YES> It will eliminate the white film from hard water but will do little for soap scum. You should try one of the sprays that you mist after you shower, they really work and most dollar store brands work just as well as the more expensive ones.
so I'm told not to shower while the water softener regenerates, why is this? will I be showering in salt water or is it hard water at that time or what? Just wondering why I shouldn't do this. Thanks
The water you would be showering in wouldn't be filtered and you would be emptying the tank faster than it can fill up...:)
Our well water has a low ph, so we have a acid neutralizer, which protects our pipes but causes the water to be hard. It seems to me that a water softener would diminish the benefits of the neutralizer; (protecting the plumbing from corrosion). Is it worth the trouble of installing a water softener? Would the water really be significantly better? ie: washing clothes, shower water, etc.
You should install softener. You may need to adjust neutralizer setting, but the two have little effect on each other. You will notice huge difference if properly adjusted. Wife loved effect on hair, wash, etc...
