My water softener tank has a dirty brine in the bottom. I understand there has to be water in the bottom, but this water is very dark brown - looks muddy. It has been that way since I moved into the house, but I've never had time to look into what, if anything, I should do about it. Anyway, the softener is due for salt, so I thought this would be a good time to clean it if I need to.
Should it be cleaned and if so, how do I go about it? Thanks.
The brown sludge is from the lubricants used to help release salt pellets or blocks from their press molds. It accumulates over the years.
Turn off the softener just to ensure it won't start while your cleaning it. Then, bail-out as much water as you can and get rid of it. Finally, add clean water and swish around with a broom. Remove all of this water and re-fill the salt tank to the approximate level the sludge water was before you cleaned it. Then add salt, turn the softener back on and let it regenerate.
Cleaning the brine from a water softener brine tank means initially checking to see if the water levels are low. Find out how to use a broom ...
I used water softener salt in my driveway. It's a big hill going down into traffic, so I have to wait for the salt to work its magic before I can go anywhere (the roads are fine. My driveway is a mess.) How long will it take for water softener salt to melt ice on a driveway?
Water softener salt is chemically the same as ice melting salt and will work just fine... If it is the pellet type, the larger pellets will take longer to dissolve ice than a granulated or rock crystal type of salt will.
You need to apply salt liberally to remove a layer of ice, scatter it across the entire drive area, use at least 50# for each 100 feet of driveway.
How fast it will work is also dependent on the temperature - above 25 degrees F it will work quite quickly, from 15 to 25 not so fast, from 0 to 15 it is pretty slow, and below zero salt will barely touch ice.
Used to soften water in dishwasher.
Box contains 1.5 kg (3.3 lbs)
Hi all,
In a bit of a pickle here. Our Teka dishwasher makes the usual operating noise when switched on, but no water is pulled into the machine and the "low water softener salt" light comes on. I cannot find this salt anywhere. Does anyone know what brands of salt there are for use in dishwashers? Where to buy them (downunder)? And would this be the reason why the water is not being drawn into the machine? The detergent tablet is still in its compartment and the door hasn't opened.
Any help would be super.
RonR.
From what you describe you have a dishwasher with a built in water softener? You are in Austraillia and don't know where to buy water softener salt?
Here in the states you can buy it almost anywhere form grocery stores to hardware stores. You might look for water softeners in the phone book they will know where you can buy salt.
For any water softener the more pure the salt the better. Whatever you do don't use table salt. Most has anti-caking agents and iodine. You want solar salt.
I have a water softener and curious if anyone knows of studies on how much it will increase your sodium level and does it add to blood pressure?. After all it uses a lot of salt and runs weekly in my house, and the salt has to go somewhere.
The salt is used to clean the veins on the water softner, it doesn't actually directly soften the water that you drink.
So once a week the softener enters it's cleaning cycle, it mixes up some water with the salt tablets and runs it through the system, a chemical reaction takes place and 'pulls' all the crud off the softening fins and the waste is flushed away and everything rinsed out. Then softening procedes as normal, with the water source being passed over the softening fins and into your household pipes/system.
So in short no it doesn't :-)

The Benefits of a Salt Free Water Softener
You may wonder, “Why do I have to use a salt free water softener ?” The question is sensible. After all, what difference does it make to stick with the regular water softeners? They have been around for so many years, and have been used by thousands of households all over the world.
However, when you get to see the issues with conventional water softeners and the benefits of salt free water softener, you would seriously consider getting the latter.
How Home Water Softeners WorkIt’s well-known that water is derived from the underground. However, if the bedrock is composed of limestone, your water supply can possibly be enriched with calcium and magnesium. They then combine to create hard water.
Hard water can be damaging to your pipes, since they can cause corrosion. They can also make it harder for you to wash your clothes or clean your plates. If you’re bathing with hard water, expect your skin and hair to be too dry.
You then use a water softener. This equipment is composed of small resin beads. When water gets into the tank, the beads will then get rid of magnesium and calcium from the water.
...Mailbox - Water softener salt Q! - Coupon Gossip!
Well, living here in the valley, you know we've got HARD water. If you're on a well like we are, you know it's a constant battle to stay ahead of the hard water buildup. We have a water softener, but it only does so much. I was excited by this offer to test just how hard our water is! Honesty, I wasn't sure if the test strip scale would go high enough. A really cheap...okay, FREE...way to see if the water softener is helping.
