I am in the market for purchasing a water softener system. All we have information about so far is a kinetico system. Any advice about this or other recommended systems to consider would be great!
We have a water softener from Sears, which has served us well. An advantage when you buy from Sears is that repair parts are readily available.
Water softeners remove hardness, while water purifiers are effective for drinking water. Learn more differences between softeners and purifiers ...
I live in an area with very hard water, and have had to replace two water heaters in 6 years due to sediment buildup. If I were to put in a whole-house water softening system, would that solve / reduce the hot water heater sediment problem? (That would not be the only reason for installing the water softener.) Thanks.
A water softener extends the life a just about all fixtures; water heater, faucets, shower heads, sprayers. And they keep nasty stains from forming on shower walls, tubs and sinks. Drain the tank and flush it every few weeks. This will also extend the life of your tank

This is a major rainsoft system with carbon filtration and salt tank. The salt is not supposed to back up in the system and the water is the same as my drinking water and does not taste salty.

i am desperate. I have tried to find consumer reports with no luck, only sites promoting their system. I have very hard water. is affecting the pipes, appliances, hair, clothes, etc. What is a dependable easy to use system that wont eat all my savings?
The main issue is, who is going to service it. Find out before you buy. Check Sears, they have the best softiner for the money. Take a water sample with you no matter where you go. This way you will get the proper size for your needs. Be sure to use a glass container for your sample. Most softiners use about 40 gallons to regenerate. The proper size will insure fewer regenerations. Use a pellet type salt. Solar salt is quite dirty.
I received an estimate from Clearwater on a new watersoftener and a reverse osmosis drinking water system, everything inlcuded - including installation for $1600. My father seems to think that this price is high. Is it, or is it a fair price? Also if you have a softener, do you need the r/o system as well or is it ok to just drink the softened water?
Your paying to much depending on how large the water softener is. Yes, you should have a RO system along with a water softener. Water softeners raise the TDS(total dissolved solids) in water with excess sodium. It's not healthy to drink all that sodium. You can get a system much cheaper than that, not installed but installation usually cost about $200-$300 dollars. My company would sell you a top of the line water softener and RO for $1000.00 delivered to your house. Installation would be up to you. You would save 3-4 hundred dollars.

Improved Water Softener Systems Provide Better Efficiency
The salt based, ion exchange water softener system is the most commonly used water softening system in Utah. The main drawback of this system has always been the salt that is used, and inconvenience of the cycling every day.
Utah water softener companies have made new improvements to this system. It now uses up to 75% less salt than the old system. This makes the water safer to drink and water plants with. The smaller amount of salt also helps to lengthen the life of appliances and plumbing. You still get the benefit of softer clothes and can use fewer detergents and skin care products.
This system works by using salt or sodium as a positively charged ion working with an exchange medium which gets coated with calcium and magnesium. The free sodium ions are released into the water where the water passing through the softener has its calcium and magnesium removed by this exchange.
Once the medium is coated with these particles, however, it needs to be recharged. This is done by flushing it with a brine solution that will replace the calcium and magnesium with new salt ions. This process has been refined by many Utah water softening companies so that less salt has to be used. Now you don’t have to flush the system everyday and you can still have soft water all the time.
...What to Know Before Buying a Water Softener | Water Softener Reviews
Anybody who lives with the headache and hassle of hard water knows how invaluable a water softener can be. These systems can turn hard, mineral-encrusted water into smooth, clear, and clean tap water. Water softeners can eliminate the problems of rings in the bathtub and clogged pipes by ensuring that the water running through your taps doesn’t leave any residue behind. And the chances are that if you live with the problem of hard water, you will know about it right away. Although it might be quite apparent that you need a water softener, other things may not be so obvious. There are many things to consider before you buy a water softening system and without knowing some basics, you could end up with only a bigger headache.
The first thing you need to know before you think about buying a water softener is how hard the water actually is. You can determine how hard your water is by getting a professional to test the water or you can do it yourself with a do-at-home kit. Hiring a professional for this job has an additional advantage because not only will you find out the hardness of the water but they will also provide a detailed report on the kind of softener you need. If you don’t use a professional but do test the water yourself, bring the results of the water hardness test with you when you buy your softener. A professional water softener retailer should be able to direct you to which type would work best for you.
