My water softener tank has a dirty brine in the bottom. I understand there has to be water in the bottom, but this water is very dark brown - looks muddy. It has been that way since I moved into the house, but I've never had time to look into what, if anything, I should do about it. Anyway, the softener is due for salt, so I thought this would be a good time to clean it if I need to.
Should it be cleaned and if so, how do I go about it? Thanks.
The brown sludge is from the lubricants used to help release salt pellets or blocks from their press molds. It accumulates over the years.
Turn off the softener just to ensure it won't start while your cleaning it. Then, bail-out as much water as you can and get rid of it. Finally, add clean water and swish around with a broom. Remove all of this water and re-fill the salt tank to the approximate level the sludge water was before you cleaned it. Then add salt, turn the softener back on and let it regenerate.

our house has a water softener unit about 10 yrs old; there seems to be a large chunk of salt at the bottom; what is the best way to dissolve it?
Jeanne suggests solar salt; is this a joke?; never heard of it
You likely will not be able to dissolve it. This happened to me once, and we threw it away and switched to solar salt. This dissolves much easier and we haven't had any trouble since. Good Luck!
I just got home for the night and it's about 3:30am. I am nervous to go to bed... I don't know if there is some sort of harmful leak.
Hire a technician from the aquarium and let him/her fix the tank or inspect the tank A.S.A.P.
Try your local county dump, but they may charge you. Your best bet is to find a company that buys metal and haul it to them. Not only will they take it off your hands, it might put some coin into your pocket.

...is it safe to not use water conditioner in my fish tank?
Filters alone won’t remove chlorine or chloramine. Carbon will, but over time. In the meantime, your fish will be exposed to harmful chemicals.
If your water supply uses chlorine to treat the water, this will dissipate in 24 hours. So you could leave a container of water sit out for a day or so and the chlorine would be removed. But that isn’t true for chloramine, or other contaminants (metals, organic compounds) that may be in the tapwater.
It’s safest (for your fish) to always use a conditioner. Then your water is safe for them BEFORE it’s added to the tank – not several hours later.
You must ALWAYS treat tap water with conditioner to neutralize chlorine/chloramine. You should even use it with bottled water as you can’t always be guaranteed bottled water isn’t simply filtered tap water. The exception would be distilled and reverse osmosis water, but you shouldn’t use that for your betta because it lacks trace...
