So we have a water softener, it came with our house when we bought it. But my dad decided to turn it off or whatever cause he said it would damage our sewer or something like that. So me and my mom decided to turn it back on and just not tell him. But the problem is we have no idea how to do it.
A couple of things about the water softener. Most kinds require some kind of maintenance. Most kinds require periodic addition of salt. It isn't a matter of just turning it on. However, to turn it on, it will have a switch somewhere and you will have to open valves (inlet and outlet usually). If it is "hard wired", he may have turned it off with a breaker in the house's breaker box.
His concern is probably about a septic system. A sewer system would not make any difference. The latest research on this indicates it's ok to use a water softener with a septic system.
Salt type water softeners add sodium to the water. This can be problematic for people with blood pressure issues and generally, we get too much sodium in our diet anyway.
I think the best thing to do is level with your dad. Arm yourself with the facts. Here are two websites that will make you extremely well informed about the subject. If you present it in an informed and non emotional way, your dad will most likely be impressed and listen to you. Don't expect him to say yes right at first. He will need a little time to think it over.

I just moved into a new home and would like to have a water softener installed. The main water supply (shut off values) is located in the coat closet though. I don't want to put a water softener in the coat closet. The house is on a slab foundation. Can we put the water softener some where else? If so, what are our options?
There's no point in having a water softener unless it feeds all the water outlets in the house. You really want soft water for showering, clothes washing and your water heater, so you want to make sure you can connect the softener in a spot that will feed all these things.
I recommend that you bite the bullet and put the softener in the coat closet. That will be the easiest, cheapest and best place to install it. If that simply won't work, call a plumber and have him/her look over your plumbing system and give you more specific advice.

My water softener tank has a dirty brine in the bottom. I understand there has to be water in the bottom, but this water is very dark brown - looks muddy. It has been that way since I moved into the house, but I've never had time to look into what, if anything, I should do about it. Anyway, the softener is due for salt, so I thought this would be a good time to clean it if I need to.
Should it be cleaned and if so, how do I go about it? Thanks.
The brown sludge is from the lubricants used to help release salt pellets or blocks from their press molds. It accumulates over the years.
Turn off the softener just to ensure it won't start while your cleaning it. Then, bail-out as much water as you can and get rid of it. Finally, add clean water and swish around with a broom. Remove all of this water and re-fill the salt tank to the approximate level the sludge water was before you cleaned it. Then add salt, turn the softener back on and let it regenerate.

We have just purchased a home with a salt water softener. The water is all foamy and cloudy when it comes out of the faucet and there is no bypass - ALL the water in the house runs through it. There are 4 of us and 3 pets. Is it healthy/safe to drink softened water or should we get a water cooler for drinking and cooking?
If it has a water purifier than it's fine, however the softener has just that in it, softener. I recommend the PUR system that hooks onto your faucet. They even have the one that has flavored cartridges so you can drink both plain and flavored. It's available at Target for about $50. It's alot cheaper than buying bottled water which runs around $5 for every 24 bottles you buy. Hope this helps!;)
P.S. Water has flouride but you can get flouride in ACT mouthwash now. It's more important for you to drink water that's purified than to worry about flouride. I've been in dental for almost 20 yrs and the ACT is wonderful and you only use it once a day, preferrably before bed.
Please list reasons why you personally chose to buy a water softener for your home in the order of most importance to least importance. And which brand did you choose?
Some reasons to stir up your mind: features of the water softener, the benefits to your home, cheaper than hard water, skin problems, less home cleaning, extending appliances, clothes, and so on.
All comments are great.
I got a water softener many years ago for my rural house in upstate NY. Not only was the water hard, it had dissolved iron in it. I got a water softener from Sears and used salt pellets that had something called "Rid Rust" in it, which eliminated the iron. It worked very well, but I sold the house after about four years and no longer have that softener.
When I used it, I found the softened water to be too soft. It seemed to take forever to rinse soap, for example. Therefore, I set the system up with a valve where I could bleed a little untreated water back into the system so that the water was still soft but just a little harder. This worked well.
I also plumbed the system so that the toilet got untreated water. I could go either way on this, as hard water will leave more water stains and cause valves to fail more quickly. But I hated to flush soft water down the toilet. This may not be as big an issue with today's 1.6-gallon toilets. (They were 3.5 gallons back then.)

What to Know Before Buying a Water Softener | Water Softener Reviews
Anybody who lives with the headache and hassle of hard water knows how invaluable a water softener can be. These systems can turn hard, mineral-encrusted water into smooth, clear, and clean tap water. Water softeners can eliminate the problems of rings in the bathtub and clogged pipes by ensuring that the water running through your taps doesn’t leave any residue behind. And the chances are that if you live with the problem of hard water, you will know about it right away. Although it might be quite apparent that you need a water softener, other things may not be so obvious. There are many things to consider before you buy a water softening system and without knowing some basics, you could end up with only a bigger headache.
The first thing you need to know before you think about buying a water softener is how hard the water actually is. You can determine how hard your water is by getting a professional to test the water or you can do it yourself with a do-at-home kit. Hiring a professional for this job has an additional advantage because not only will you find out the hardness of the water but they will also provide a detailed report on the kind of softener you need. If you don’t use a professional but do test the water yourself, bring the results of the water hardness test with you when you buy your softener. A professional water softener retailer should be able to direct you to which type would work best for you.
