I have oil heat and city water I am told that the water is hard and will cause the pipes to rot out is this true and is the fix a water softner? Also if the water softner is the fix how much do they cost to install or how hard is it to install and how long do they last?

I love water softner! I visited my boyfriends parents house and they have this feature. I have never loved my skin until I got out of that shower. They are quite pricy but worth it. You only need to add salt to the unit once every six months. Go to Lowe's and do some pricing. you will not regret it and it will save the pipes

Hello! I may have a problem with water hammer or pockets of air or whatever in my plumbing system. In order to troubleshoot, I want to drain the water from the pipes for the whole house and then refill it. What should I do with the water in water heater and water softner? Do I drain the water heater and water softner? Just turn power off on my Kenmore water softner? or use bypass valve? Thanks for your time!

turn off the heater. shut the valve to prevent siphoning. by-pass the softener. install water hammer devices sold at your hardware store. you may need a few if four house is big. if you need to you can use compression fittings or tiger gripps.

We have just moved into a new house and realised the water in the area is very hard and contains a lot of limescale. Over time this will affect most of our new appliances. We have seen various methods to combat this, including a water softner device that connects to the main water supply, what do people recommend?

OK - limescale is a chemical solution which cannot be filtered out and there are usually few solids that are going to let a magnetic or depositing device really work. A full softener with salt is the only answer unless its a combi boiler in which case a Combimate is usually adequate. We are plumbers in the Thames valley and the only unit that we regularly install without the phone ringing afterwards is a Kinetico. It uses water flow to operate the salt flushing process rather than an electric timer - one less thing to go wrong but you do have to be disciplined with the addition of salt. Expect the excercise to cost £1000 depending upon the simplicity of your incoming cold pipework.A good DIYer can do this or any reliable plumber but make sure it is installed correctly.

They definitely help and make your soap foamier, etc .... but do NOT water your plants with softened water ... it will kill them!
