I asked the following question yesterday:
I need to buy a water storage tank for my well. The tanks range in size from 250 to 5000 gallons. Assuming the pipe fitting at the bottom of a tank is 1.5 inches, how do I calculate the gallons/minute flow from the various capacity tanks?
I received this response, but it is a bit unclear. Can someone help me if I give the following: capacity of water tank 5000 gallons, height 15 feet, diameter of tank 8 feet. Assume it's full.
The velocity of the stream is basically sqrt ( 2 * gravity * the height of from the valve to the top level of the water in the tank). = sqrt ( 2gH) = m/s
The max flow rate is when the tank is filled = Q = cross sectional area of the fitting * velocity...this flow rate will decrease as the tank gets empty due to a decrease in hydrostatic pressure...this is assuming the valve of the tank is <<< smaller than the width of the tank.
Ok, so the speed of the water is Sqrt( 2gH ) m/s(=meter/second), where H is the waterlevel in meters. To know the total amount per second you have to multiply this by the area of the opening, which is Pi*radius^2. So you get F=Sqrt( 2gH r^4 Pi^2) where F is the flowrate in m^3/s. To convert to gallons per second, multiply by 0,003785.

The combe boiler we currently have keeps going faulty, we have low mains water pressure and have been told a combi isn't suitable. We have no water storage tanks. Anybody know what boiler type to recommend.
A combination boiler should not have been installed if you do not have enough pressure, a combi will break down because of lack of pressure, they should be operated at minimum 1 bar (whether vaillant or not is irrelevant), Vaillant and Worcester Bosch are the best boilers on the market, but Worcester are more local (near Birmingham) and have more approved installers, you cannot force mains pressure with a pump, either install tanks (size would be determined by usage and flow rate from the mains), or upgrade your water supply to private main, (you are likely on the common main), the water board will connect you at the border of your property, but from there to your house is your responsibility, both are chargeable and a plumber would do the work from the boundary to your house.
Stainless steel 1/4" male connection to fit RO tubing
Extra large storage capacity for high use RO systems
14 gallon tank with 10 gallon storage capacity
What would one of those cost me? Where would I get it?
It's for passive solar water heating. The idea is to put it upstream of the combi boiler, and heat it either directly or with a coil from the solar water heater. The combi boiler runs at mains pressure of course.
How do I arrange things to that the hot water gets to expand when it gets hot?
Is there anything else wrong with this that will make something explode or otherwise embarrass me?
You can do what I think you are trying to do, and the correct equipment is available. You may need a heat exchanger, not sure how succesful this will be at such low relative temps. Solar hot water heating is used as pre heating before the boiler, as it only gives a small rise in temp. this is not normally done at mains pressure, I don't think the water regs would permit this. A combi boiler does not, as I understand, have to be at mains pressure...this is not a complete answer....need to have a check in the relevant water regs for your country.

I have a new residential water well and a choice of installing a standard well pump and tank at my house or a water pump system that provides constant controllable water pressure without a storage tank. The price difference is $1000. Standard pump is cheaper.
Which should I choose and why?
Look at it from a maintenance stand point. If anything goes wrong with your tankless unit, no water. If your pump goes down, you still have water in your storage tank which can be used by applying air pressure from a portable compressor.
However, tankless units are nice and neat, if only the well water was. Scaling, possible plugging due to contaminates, rocks brought up by the pump. Also, tankless has no surge capacity.
Basically, pump and store is rugged, cheap and easily repaired. Tankless is neat, convenient and limited.
it could be the circulating pump , if your boiler and storage tank are using the same pump.next if you own a older home check to see if all your piping from the water main to boiler is copper,in older homes they could have used galvinised piping which could build up rust from the inside and reduce flow.also check to see if there is any air locks in the system.

"We have no doubt they will hold up to their end of the bargain," Hendersonville Utilities Director Lee Smith said.
The water line extension, which was endorsed by the Henderson County Board of Commissioners on a split vote, has been controversial.
Some advocates of preserving rural farm land say extensions deep into the rural parts of the county encourage urban sprawl. And the two county commissioners who voted against the water line say the extension clearly violates the county's land-use plan. Proponents of the extension said it was fair because the developer committed to pay for it.
"It's a travesty," Environmental and Conservation Organization Director David Weintraub said. "The developer forces the county's hand and then does not reimburse the city."
Henderson County originally approved the Grand Highlands project for 99 lots on 288 acres. The developer planned to use wells to supply the project with water. But when wells came up empty, the developer sought a city water line. It also asked county planners to triple the density. The Henderson County Planning Board approved the project for 320 lots on 408 acres in July of 2007.
...Clever rainwater tank – Create head pressure « PermaculturePower
I have some experience with collecting rainwater in the tropics. Both for household use and for increasing success of tree plantings in semi-arid conditions.
Collecting rainwater from the roof of the house where it is to be used can be very practical in many areas. When living in the northwest corner of Tanzania 1988-89, we built a rainwater tank with a couple of refinements that worked well.
Division of the tank into top part (to save the potential energy of the water entering the tank which provided a higher pressure {with better water flow} even when the tank contained a small amount of water) and a bottom part to save the overflow from the top as a long-term storage..
Use the top of the tank as one of the “collection roofs”. Water tanks are usually covered for many good reasons (prevent algae growth, mosquito breeding, evaporation, limit direct contamination). But this often has resulted in that the rain which happens to land on the tank itself, runs off to no use, while the rain which hits the roof of the house next to it is carefully lead into the tank. The house had a roof area of about 42 m2 so using the top of the tank (>2,5 m2) increased the effective area with 6 % (actually more because we weren’t able to put gutters on the whole house perimeter). Capturing the rain on the tank top was done with a small cement mortar ridge along the edge.
