hi can anyone solve a problem with hot water storage tank ?
It's all sky

I have hot water storage tank which is fully lagged but when I have a full tank of hot water at midnight it is only lukewarm at 8.00 am the following morning. surely a fully lagged tank should hold longer than this. Anyone got any ideas?

USA Maybe breaks in the lagging. Gaps in insulation are sources of heat loss. Maybe not a sufficient R Value of lagging. Are there any leaks which would cause cold water to be added to the tank? Is there any usage late at night?

What are the advantages and drawbacks to a tankless hot water heater over a typical hot water storage tank?
Perlan

We currently have a coil that heats our water...and we take short showers and the kids get half a bath. We were considering adding a tankless hot water heater such as "instant hot" to our gas or a water tank like "super stor ultra" to our oil burner. I'm wondering if a product like instant hot will really give an endless hot shower and fill the tub too. I'd appreciate feedback/experience with this.

I don't think instant hot is the best answer. I'm not sure that will supply the quantity you need. Tankless water heaters can do the job, though. They're like the Bosch AquaStar series. They totally replace your water heater. You can split your water service off to two lines and have two tankless water heaters, if you want. These draw a lot of gas and might require increasing the size of your gas service. A major advantage, though, is that they don't store hot water, so they don't waste gas keeping a large amount of water hot all day and all night.

Also...look for the ones that meet the level of efficiency required for a tax credit. I believe the credit is $300. That's not just an income deduction...it's actually a credit. The Bosch AquaStar at the link below doesn't meet the efficiency requirements, but I got one at Home Depot for under $400, so I decided against trying for the tax credit.

My hot water storage tank is leaking, but I'm going on vacation. Can I shut off the supply until I come back?

The tank needs replaced. I've been aware of this for a couple of months, but now it is leaking hot water. The question is, can I shut off the supply to the tank and just let it drain, then replace it when I get back next week? Should I also shut down the boiler? Since I won't be home, and it's summer, there will be no call for heat or hot water. Is there any risk to shutting down the boiler for a week?

Shut it all down seeing how you wont be there..also keep in mind any type of appliance like an ice maker in a fridge, or anything depending on water..turn off also, for lack of water in them and them running will ruin them..make sure any electrc to the heater or gas is shut off as well

Why hot water is coming out water pipe system vent whose outlet is higher than water level at storage?

The water system comprise of storage tanks at the roof. From there a pipe goes to the boiler then to different rooms in the lst, 2nd and 3rd floor of the building. Another distribution pipe from the water storage tank run along with hot water pipe to the different rooms. Along the pipe system is a pipe vent with outlet higher than the water level at the water storage tank. During the night when no one is using water, hot water is rushing out at the vent intermittently. This did not happen before the old water tank was replaced.

Sounds like pressure. But it's not up to you or us to resolve this. The plumbing people, ideally the ones that replaced the tank earlier are the ones to contact.

do i need to change my hot water cylinder if i am fitting another cold water storage tank?

i only have a 25 gallon cold water tank and a 27 gallon hot water cylinder. i want to install a shower pump, i have been told that i should fit another 25 gallon cold water tank next to my other one giving me 50 gallons. would this mean i would need to get a bigger hot water cylinder?

Your cylinder is 108 litres, your tank is 100 litres and constantly filling, you don't even need the extra tank for this cylinder, check the output of the pump, you can then work out how much hot water you need for a (10 minute shower), a 10 litres minute shower will run the hot water for 20 minutes (if equalised with cold), unless the cylinder is not heating fully.

  • Solar Water Heater

There are two kinds of solar water heater – passive and active. Both collect radiant heat from the sun into a solar hot water panel, and both can serve much of any household’s hot water needs, while at the same time, both can cut back considerably on energy costs.

An active system circulates water (or other heat-transferring fluids) through a solar water pump, while a passive system circulates the liquid(s) through use of a process called natural convection.

Many factors influence how much hot water a solar water heater can provide, most particularly:

    • the type and size of solar water heater used

    • the climate at the site in question

    • and the quality of the site as regards solar access

Building a timberframe home from scratch.: We#39;re In Hot Water!

In our doublewide, hot water is simple... turn the knob and hot water pours out of the cheesy plastic shower head, thanks to grid electricity and a typical electric hot water tank. There are just three major problems as I see them: (1) after 15 minutes in the shower, I start thinking about all the coal that had to be dug up and burned in the power plant to provide me with that cozy hot water (2) after 20 minutes the tank runs out of hot water and (3) a bill shows up every month from the electric company with taxes, surcharges, and gratuities added on. I have succeeded in solving all of these problems in our new house... to some degree. The neatest part of our new hot water system is the desuperheater on our heat pump. This gizmo taps into the FREE heat that is been sucked out of our house when the...
