We currently have a coil that heats our water...and we take short showers and the kids get half a bath. We were considering adding a tankless hot water heater such as "instant hot" to our gas or a water tank like "super stor ultra" to our oil burner. I'm wondering if a product like instant hot will really give an endless hot shower and fill the tub too. I'd appreciate feedback/experience with this.
I don't think instant hot is the best answer. I'm not sure that will supply the quantity you need. Tankless water heaters can do the job, though. They're like the Bosch AquaStar series. They totally replace your water heater. You can split your water service off to two lines and have two tankless water heaters, if you want. These draw a lot of gas and might require increasing the size of your gas service. A major advantage, though, is that they don't store hot water, so they don't waste gas keeping a large amount of water hot all day and all night.
Also...look for the ones that meet the level of efficiency required for a tax credit. I believe the credit is $300. That's not just an income deduction...it's actually a credit. The Bosch AquaStar at the link below doesn't meet the efficiency requirements, but I got one at Home Depot for under $400, so I decided against trying for the tax credit.
A quick overview of installing the SunCache Solar Water Heating System which is the lowest-cost residential-scale renewable energy system ...
Your thermal cut of is a high temerature limit switch that cuts off the heat from the tank when the high temperature has been reached.
Anyone know where i can get one? everything i see online is tankless
Any major home improvement store (Home Depot, Menards, Lowes) caries them.
The tank lining is cracked and does need replaced, however (espcially since I don't use the water heater) can't I just get the cold water storage tank removed and pipe direct from the mains???
Expect advice appreciated, as the plumbers I spoke seemed more intent on earning lots of money than giving good advice....
'expert' I mean not 'expect'
The tank is in the cupboard so it's nice and easy to work with, and not much of a problem to remove.
I've heard of relatives who have gotten rid of their storage tank when they got central heating (however I'm not getting central heating).
The shower is already mains fed so I feel the other ones might as well be too. Someone said that the original tank was put in because they didn't use/trust one-way valves back then and there was a risk of contamination, if the water ever got back into the mains system.
I see what you mean about the hot water tank having to be low pressure, and yes that could be a reason to renew rather than possibly get rid of the tank and fit a one-way valve. It would be better if it could handle high pressure though, perhaps with a new valve leading to it.
I'm going to speak to another plumber in the next couple of days so it'll be interesting to hear what he says.
You cant plumb the hot water cylinder to the mains unless you change it for a purpose made unvented stainless steel type, and this would require a 22mm feed from the mains, the water currently feeding the bathroom from the cold water storage cistern is balancing the hot and cold water, wont make a difference to the shower, but is easier to control the tap connected type of shower head or mixing valve type, the other thing this system does is reduce the condensation on the toilet cistern, because the stored water is nearer to room Temperature.
It is good practice to chlorine clean the system when you change the cws cistern, and to fit a bye law 30 kit to it.
We are setting up home in a new apartment and as water supply in this city is irratic we have installed a buffer tank in the loft through which the entire house gets its water. Pressure is low as there is a very short head of the water coming out of the buffer tanks(Hardly 2 Ft. in four bathrooms and kitchen) and branching out to hot and cold water lines.. Am thinking of installing a booster pump. Would it cause any problems if the booster pump water passes through the storage water heater?
The pump should fill the buffer tank and run slower than normal water flow because it would suck on the system 'Not good' . At the top of the buffer tank a pressure switch needs to be mounted to operate the pump.Off at 60psi and on at 40 lets say. Keep an air zone at the top of the tank for pressure accumulation. Also plumb a bypass around the pump with a check valve and be a check valve before the pump. This will boost the entire system until the booster tanks run low. I am assuming you have a normal home water heater.
Solar Water Heater - Civil Engineering Forum
A more expensive but often more powerful alternative to the flat plate solar hot water panel is a concentrating collector. These have the potential to produce much higher temperatures than flat plate panel solar water heater systems, although on cloudier days they can actually be less effective than their more economical counterparts. Though storage tanks are not a required component of solar water heater systems, without them one can only utilize the solar power available in that given moment. With a storage tank, on the other hand, the solar water heater preheats the water and the tank maintains its temperature until the hot water is needed. A typical storage tank will hold enough heated water to provide for a single day’s supply.
Vacuum relief valve? - DIY Chatroom - DIY Home Improvement Forum
If the vent line is blocked when the tank is draining, it will cause a vacuum that can damage the tank. I would like to install a valve on the vent line to allow emergency vacuum relief, but low pressure water still needs to flow freely in both directions past the vacuum relief valve without any leakage. I'm unable to add a valve directly to the tank and it needs to be installed on the vent line.
