Is the Lenz 2 VAWT usable for pumping water from a shallow/deep well?
Silhouette of the past

I am planning to use a car differential to convert the vertical axis rotation of a Lenz 2 turbine to horizontal, for pumping water. Is there a better way to do it? Where can I find a plan for a better gearbox in lieu of a differential?

So I imagine you want to use a vertical axis wind turbine to pump water.

I say set up the wind turbine, attach an alternator/generator,if the turbine doesnt have one already, and use the 12 DC power to drive a wellpump. simpler and probably more reliable as well as cheaper.

My well has stopped pumping water. The pressure gauge reads zero. When I turn on the faucet no water come out.?
IMG_8467

I checked the circuit breaker and reset. Does anyone know anything about wells? Prior to this, when I turn on the water it would start, pause, then restart.

Can you hear the pump running? If not, check the power: If it is the kind which plugs into an outlet, plug in a lamp or radio to test it. Otherwise use a voltmeter to see if power is applied to the pump.

Is there water in the well? Wells usually have access for a calibrated line to measure the well's water level. There should be information about the depth of the intake and estimated (or measured) refill rate left by the driller, installer, or a previous owner. Look around the pump house and through the papers which came with the house.

Is it a pump which needs priming? Maybe it ran dry from excessive use and now needs to have water added to the injection line? See http://www.inspect-ny.com/water/Prime_Th e_Well.htm for several techniques of verifying this and several methods for priming.

all i know at this point. is that my well pump runs, but is not pumping water.

Over 90 percent of all houshold well/water delivery systems use either a submersible or jet pump. There are a few piston pumps still sucking on water supplies and more deep well rod pumps sililar to the oil well "grasshoppers" doing the pumping. I won't go in to them although I could. An easy way to know what type you have is to answer the question "Can I see the pump?". If you can see it, out in the air, in a pit, in your basement, in an enclosure, whatever, it is a jet pump. If you can't see it because it is physically inside the well, it is a submersible. Jet pumps are further classified as being either being deep-well or shallow well depending on whether or not the jet assembly is located in the well or on the pump case itself.

Submersible pumps are designed to operate in the well below the water level and push the water to the surface. The motors that run these pumps are also designed to run under water and are attachted directly to the pump. They are by far the most efficient use of electricity and if installed correctly in a producing well do not need to be primed.

Jet pumps are designed to operate above ground and do need to be primed. Only once, at initial startup, assuming the pumps are used to deliver water within design specs. and all other parts of the pumping system are functioning properly.

Considerably more information is needed to attempt to answer the question posed.

I am inclined to agree with petasucks101 to have a pro service your system with one caveat. ASK AROUND. Word of mouth is the absolute best way to hire a "well man". IMHO this industry is just full of crooks and incompetents. You should chose your pro like you chose your doctor because there is so much that he or she may do that is out of sight and bordering on the mysterious to the layman. High price and shiney equipment do not neccesarilly equate to honesty and competence.

PS to petasucks101. "If it is a sand point, it is dry."? You must have magical powers to know that anyone that has a sand point with a pump on it that doesn't produce water must be dry. Please enlighten your fellow well driller/pump installer as to how you know this so that I too can confidently tell any potential customer with a similar situation that what they need is a new well and water system @ substantial cost to them and profit for me.

My sub pump pipe that goes outside into the ground is frozen so no water is pumping out any ideas how to fix?
indnr7000081.jpg

My pump was working just fine two days ago. My bacement flooded and now it isnt pumping water out. I was told that it could be frozen due to the cold weather outside that we are having. I can hear the water pump out but when you turn off the pump the water comes back in. Any ideas....?

It should be 1 1/2" pipe coming out. Cut the pipe where it comes out of your house and push the drain pipe to the side, then put a coupling on it with 1 or 2 10' piece of pvc to get the water away from your house use duct tape to hold the coupling and pieces on. When it gets warmer take that stuff off and recoonect with glue the drain pipe that goes to the ground. Parts for that should be less than 5 dollars.

Clearwater Crawlspace Water Pump Out (727) 233-4371 - Flood ...

Most suburban homes are built with crawlspaces or underground rooms, which act as storage or utility facilities. In the advent of natural calamities, like flash floods from storms or river overflow, homeowners are faced with serious water damage problems, which include a flooded crawlspace. This 4-W tip provides a simple, yet effective and informative, guide in handling and dealing with the What/Why/Where/When and other issues associated with a flooded crawlspace.

    What causes floods?

Floods are caused by several reasons. River basins tend to overflow during the melting of snowcaps at spring or due to continuous and heavy rainfall. These usually result to floods affecting communities within the vicinity. In a similar manner, coastal areas are affected by flooding particularly during storms or caused by tidal waves after an earthquake. Flash floods can occur during storms and continuous rainfall, as well as breaks in dams and levees causing great volumes of water to rush towards homes and other establishments. In any case, a flooded crawlspace can result due to these elevated water levels prompting homeowners to take precautions in the event of such disasters.
