I DO NOT want to buy a pump. Is it possible to syphon water from an underground irrigation well to water my yard? When I tried, I got a mouth full of water but it didn't flow. Doesn't the water source have to be above where the water will flow out, like a gas tank? Any other free/cheap ways to get water out of the irrigation?
Syphons work only when the water flows from a higher to a lower level.
You need a pump.

I have got a house in spain with a domestic well. Water is pumped from the well to a holding tank, but I need pressure on the water for use in the house.
Attach a secondary pump between the tank and the house. Make sure it is designed for potable water usage. The pump rating should be low as your pipes may not be able to take pressure without leaking.
I have recently noticed that really hot water is draining into my sump pump well at a pretty steady rate. Anyone have any ideas where it is coming from? Is it possible my hot water tank is leaking into the sump well? What would be the best way to find out?
Probably the overheat/overpressure pop-off valve on your hot water heater is leaking.
Put your hand on the line coming from the pop-off valve. If it's hot, then get the pipe disconnected and confirm the leak.
We are on a well for our water supply, and it is good with the exception of too much iron. We have a water softener which removes most of the excess iron, but are about to install an irrigation system for the yard and plants. We want to remove much, if not most, of the iron before it goes into the sprinklers to reduce rusty stains, clogging of the nozzles, etc, and to reduce the load on the existing water softener.
I remember seeing, 15 years ago, someone who used an external wound-fiber core type of filter, from what I remember of it. Is that still the best, where are they available, what is better, etc?
Suggestions and recommendations are greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance,
Coach Craig
There are INLINE filters sold for this purpose, and very effective. They offer washout/clean ability and/or filter substance replacement.
Contact the pump manufacturer or a company that specifically does installations and maintenance of pumps, or a quality plumbing company
I had one installed on a well in December, and have cleaner water now. It needs monitoring, and may not ever be all you expect, but I use it (water) with no adverse effects. The one I installed is no larger than a good size thermos.

I have a heavy vinyl one inch diameter water supply line that runs from the well to the house for a distance of about 50 ft. I have extremely hard water, and I believe there is a build-up of iron in the line as pressure has diminished. Will Iron Out work? Any other ideas? I'm trying to approach this from a conservative stand-point as I don't want to dig-up my yard and driveway.
Its not the vinyl pipe. Build up won't stick to that type of pipe(usually rare cases do happen) Hard water typically builds up really bad in galvinized pipe. If you have galv pipe somewhere on the run thats probably where the problem is. Using chemical such as Iron Out or CLR is not a solution You have to replace the problem pipe. Try and figure out exactly where the problem is. If you've isolated it down to that strech it probably has to do with the well or piping next to it. Otherwise try working your way down the line inside to see where your losing pressure. Clean the mesh filters on your sinks right there on the end. Clean your showerheads with CLR(or Iron Out). Either way I highly advise you against putting Iron Out down that line, or really digging it up. Look at one end and you'll know right away if that pipe is the problem cuz you'll see the buildup.
Bricktown to Capitol Walk to Highlight World Clean Water Crisis ...
For much of his life, 12 year-old Eden spent eight hours every day toting heavy water jugs several miles from a muddy, parasite-infested pond to his small village in rural Rwanda. This burdensome chore prevented Eden from attending school and from just being a child. Eden's quality of life, and those of his fellow villagers, was dramatically changed, however, when a well was drilled in the village, ending the long treks for unclean water.
Wishing Well, a non-profit, student-led organization, was the driving force behind this and 65 other clean water projects world-wide. Oklahoma Christian University student Ryan Groves, executive director of the OC Wishing Well chapter and a co-founder of the organization, said more than 1 billion people do not have clean drinking water. An estimated 5 million people, mostly children, die each year from water-borne diseases.
The plight of people without access to clean water will be dramatized on Labor Day, September 7, when students and other Oklahomans concerned about the water crisis will fill gallon jugs at the south parking lot of the Bass Pro Shop, 200 Bass Pro Drive in Bricktown, at 9:00 a.m. and carry them to the steps of the State Capitol. Wishing Well, which raises money through art shows, prayer nights and concerts, also hopes to raise $10,000 to drill additional wells by asking businesses and individuals to contribute $1 for every gallon carried on September 7. Based on the average number of people served by a single well, a $1 donation to Wishing Well can provide clean drinking water to one person for 10 years. All funds raised by the organization go directly to clean water projects.
