Pressure of tank appears to be ok.Water will flow for 7 or 8 minutes as it normally does,and then will drop off to no flow .After about a minute or so of not flowing,the water begins to flow as normal with no decrease in pressure.If there is air in the line there is no indication as such at the faucet.The cycle has continued for three days.Anyone out there with an answer to this problem??

you may need to replace the pressure switch sounds like the diaphragm is weakening.

I need to buy a water storage tank for my well. The tanks range in size from 250 to 5000 gallons. Assuming the pipe fitting at the bottom of a tank is 1.5 inches, how do I calculate the gallons/minute flow from the various capacity tanks? How do I convert that to PSI? And, just from a pressure standpoint, would it be better for the tank to be in the sun or shade?

The velocity of the stream is basically sqrt ( 2 * gravity * the height of from the valve to the top level of the water in the tank). = sqrt ( 2gH) = m/s

The max flow rate is when the tank is filled = Q = cross sectional area of the fitting * velocity...this flow rate will decrease as the tank gets empty due to a decrease in hydrostatic pressure...this is assuming the valve of the tank is <<< smaller than the width of the tank.

If you want to learn more, do a search on the hydrostatics and the bernouli equation (general conservation of momentum / energy equation in fluid mechanics).

These are just for quick hard numbers..the true analysis would be more in depth.

I just wanted to add, there are alot of assumptions that are being made so talk to the vendors about each tank for better answers.

I have found groundwater and will dig a well. I need to know what tools are needed to test the water flow.

You will need to dig the well and then test the flow out put.

You can use the following formula to check the GPM.
29.7 X diameter of the discharge opening squared should give you approximate flow in GPM

As far as if there is adequate ground water to supply the well size and pump you choose you may have to chech with the local or regional hydrogeologic agency

water supply is from a underground drilled well. The water flow pulsates, even the hot water is pulsating with steady blasts of cold water in the hot water stream. All outlets pulsate including toilet...any ideas????

Sounds like air in the line, possibly a leak in the suction line or well going dry. If the pulsing stops after running a continuous flow for a while it could be due to a defective check valve at the top of the well aided by a leaking faucet allowing air to enter the line when the pump is not running. I would start by checking all faucets for leaks while the system is under pressure. If none of this seems to be the case, locate any and all check valves on the discharge side of the pump all the to your house and disassemble and clean, repair, or replace. If you have a sticking check valve requiring excessive pressure to open then closing till pressure goes back up then it reopens, it should be repaired asap before any damage is done to the pump.
