How can I prevent well water (iron? hard water?) from staining tub, sink and clothes a rust color?
Removing Arsenic from Drinking Water

We live in a pre-civil war home in the country and have well water. CLR is great for cleaning the tub and sink (with heavy duty scrubbing) but how can we prevent washer from staining our laundry (whites and colors?). I've heard white vinegar, super iron out--haven't tried either yet. Any thing else suggested or try those two? Don't want to pay like $3000 for a water softener when that might not take care of the problem.

You actually can make your own hard water softener and add a cup of the solution to each load of wash water along with your regular detergent. Get a plastic milk jug that has been cleaned out and add:
1/2 lb Arm & Hammer Washing Soda
1/4 lb Twenty Mule Team Borax
1 gallon of warm water

I used this homemade softener before I got my water softener because our water is so hard that our clothes weren't getting cleaned well enough. I also found that using liquid fabric softener in the wash instead of the sheets in the dryer worked better to soften the clothing.

To keep the iron color from making a ring around the toilet and constantly having to clean it, drop a couple of those denture cleaning tablets in the bowl. I used to do it either daily or every other day, but that is probably excessive. For the sinks and tub, I found carnuba wax, like you use on cars, kept the iron from accumulating on those surfaces. I just waxed up the tub and sinks about every 3-4 months. For the laundry tub, in which I do my handwashables, I used a product called Gel Gloss because it is fiberglass. This stuff is great you just spray it on, wait for it to haze and buff off. It leaves a great shine and resists the rust from acuumulating. If your tub is acrylic, you can use this on it too.

I’m looking for a material like a patch that I can use to bind two clothes together using an iron. I need the adhesive to be water proof and able to be machine washed. Does anyone know a patch like that?

Thanks in advance.

This is all I could find online but ask at your craft or fabric store, because I used to buy the stuff in sheets. You place it between two pieces of fabric and iron it to fuse them together. It's permanent when used to bond fabric to fabric. When used to bond fabric to other surfaces it is sometimes not washable.http://www.dritz.com/askus/faq/faq_07.ph p
O.k. found it!!

What's the best way to deal with well water with high iron content?
Pozzo

I currently have a Culligan Iron Cleer unit, and it has been effective in removing iron, but also is very noisy and becomes clogged with the 'mud' that comes out of our well.

Any experiences that anyone can share with different models of iron filter would be appreciated. Especially if you have >5ppm of iron in your well water.

Ok I have had this problem and it could be 1 of 2 things. 1 you foot valve could need replacing, and 2 your water level sounds like it is getting dangerously low because you should not have any mud content if both 1& 2 are fine. If you well is less than 200 ft. your water level could be low. and when we have alot I mean alot of rain my water is alittle muddy for a few days but clears up. Check on your foot valve 1st. And if you live in an area that has been drought striken like I have then worry about your water level

What is the best way to remove excess iron from well water before it goes in house for showers, drinking, etc?
Nora

We are on a well for our water supply, and it is good with the exception of too much iron. We have a water softener which removes most of the excess iron, but are about to install an irrigation system for the yard and plants. We want to remove much, if not most, of the iron before it goes into the sprinklers to reduce rusty stains, clogging of the nozzles, etc, and to reduce the load on the existing water softener.

I remember seeing, 15 years ago, someone who used an external wound-fiber core type of filter, from what I remember of it. Is that still the best, where are they available, what is better, etc?

Suggestions and recommendations are greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,
Coach Craig

There are INLINE filters sold for this purpose, and very effective. They offer washout/clean ability and/or filter substance replacement.

Contact the pump manufacturer or a company that specifically does installations and maintenance of pumps, or a quality plumbing company

I had one installed on a well in December, and have cleaner water now. It needs monitoring, and may not ever be all you expect, but I use it (water) with no adverse effects. The one I installed is no larger than a good size thermos.

how can i remove iron from well water?
If you think my well water LOOKS bad, you should SMELL it!

we have a tube well, the water from it has too much iron because of which it smells bad and we can not use for washing as the colour of utensils and clothes get rusty.

The only way you can is to have a water softener installed...

  • REMOVING IRON AND MANGANESE FROM WELL WATER

In some well water, the iron content can be very high. Iron water can sometimes look clear, but when exposed to air it becomes a yellow or brown color, especially if left and the water settles. Some well water ,when oxidized by filtration, comes off as a slight gray appearance. When this occurs the water may have silica or high hardness present. Iron and manganese does not present a health hazard but causes bad taste and stains. Iron causes red/brown stains in laundry, dishes, silverware, linens and glassware. Manganese causes black/brownish stains. Both iron and manganese creates a build-up of deposits in water heaters, water pressure tanks, water lines, faucets, and, even in the water softener. The presence of either contributes to higher energy costs due to the presence of the contaminants adhering to those items. Iron and manganese dissolved in water is exchanged for sodium with a water softener, just as it does with calcium and magnesium. During proper operation of the softener, the...
