Home Depot or Lowe's make a good filter. It will take out most of the brown stain. You have to refill it with a special salt to soften the water as the iron water is usually hard and tough on laundry suds. If its really bad you need a separate iron filter. The whole set up will run you about 4 to 500 and you need a lot of pipes to install.
But it's worth it, sweet water and no chlorine taste.

PS. don't forget to separate the outside water system for hoses etc, as you don't want to filter that. Run a seperate grey water system that does not run into your septic tank, for shower and washing machine water.This prevents Septic Tank problems. Chlorine kills the tank.

The house we recently purchased has a whole house water filter system. When we purchased the house, there was no filter installed, and the water was bypassing the system. We purchased a filter, shut off the bypass and have the water going through the filter. However, whenever we shut off the water anywhere in the house, we hear a banging noise - any ideas why and how we could stop it?

you could have air trapped in the line. you need to bleed the air and may need to install a water hammer. you might need to make sure that the water line is secured

check it out. the under the sink called the reverse osmosis filters cost $499 include install and tax comes with the carbon filter which you have to unscrew and put in new filter every six months. and the other one costs $599 with install and tax. with this one , you throw away the whole filter unlike the carbon filter one. which one is better. also there the whole house filter which comes with water softener and the under the sink filter for $2000 with tax and install. any suggestions or opinions are appreciated. thanks.

why not just get a water filter that attaches to your faucet>? they are like 25=30 bucks at walmart or target. the one I bought today was $30 and it will filter 300 gallons of water before I have to replace it.
