How do I cut off main water supply to house coming from our well?
6th August 2007 - Day 30

We are finishing our basement. One of the things we need to do is re-route a small amount of plumbing in one particular corner. In this corner of the basement sits our pump - we have well water. We will have to cut off main supply of water or cut off pump - I'm not sure which. We will be moving the pump slightly, 6-8 inches so that we can frame out walls behind it. We will then build a closet that will house the un-attractive pump, but allow easy access to it. We will also be replacing/rerouting a few feet of pipes beginning with those that come directly out of the pump housing. We are not experienced in plumbing, so would appreciate any available help.

The one question that comes to my mind is, "What type of piping is on your pump?" I have seen answers talking about soldering, turning off the valve, etc., but all this is mute, before knowing what you are working with. To try and read between the lines, or "assume" what someone means, is asking for trouble. You say you don't know much about plumbing, so what makes you think you can learn something useful from this site? General questions are OK, but this is a major issue, whether anyone else agrees or not, because it doesn't matter to them that they give half answers, or are vague in their attempts at seeming to know how to do something. You will be the ones, sitting there with a disconnected pump, and a possible flooded basement, if you do something wrong. Will they come running to your aid, or pay to fix something you broke, that they told you to do, not completely understanding the whole situation? I would suggest calling a local Master plumber, and ask him to come look at your project. Ask if he will walk you through the project as a supervisor, for a fee, and see if he will help you out. I do a lot of consulting work for people, and it lets me be in more places, and helps the customer learn plumbing the correct way, by a quailified Master plumber, who is the only person you should be asking questions about this. He knows the codes, and can alert you of issues you might not know to ask. Good luck to you!

Could anyone help with a problem with my house water supply?
Wagon house

Ok, so earlier in the week the Ballcock in our water tank broke and we had a minor over flow problem. So we shut off our water supply to the tank temporarily (Theres a tap, which controls it attached to one of the pipes leading into the tank.) until we could get a new one, turning it on whenever the water in the tank got too low. We woke today to find that our water tank was empty and the water was no longher going into it (our water supply won't turn on). I bought a new Ballcock today and fitted it, however there is still no water supply into the tank, the only water we now have in the house is through the kitchen sink, which is attached to the mains supply, not the tank and is only cold. This means theres no water going to the toilet or bathroom and and we have no hot water. The only way to fill the tank up is manually, which can take hours. Can anybody please help? Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated. :)

from what you describe, the toilet is the LAST of many plumbing repairs that have come to play.
IF you have NO hot water to your taps in the house, no cold water going through the emergency shutoff valve under the toilet or through the supply to the tank,.....
AND no water to a shower, or bathroom sink, ONLY the kitchen sink?
That is what we plumbers refer to as - Need to repipe.

in houses older than 80 years old, many times, the emergency shutoff valves corrode the rusty steel pipe they're connected to. To replace them both, you run the risk of getting into something FAR more difficult than simply repairing / rebuilding the inside of a toilet tank.

Please!!!! >>> Call a plumber. Often you can get the best pricing from someone in the phone book with a small listing, keeping in mind ;that any company that pays 10 to $20,000.00 a month for a full page ad in the yellow pages has to recoup those expenses from YOU>$$$$$$

Good luck.

Can pex tubing be used for water supply from pump house to home underground?
nine-dragon pool pump

WHAT TYPE OF PEX CAN BE USED FOR SUPPLY WATER FROM PUMP HOUSE TO HOME BURIED UNDERGROUND. AND WHAT SIZE SHOULD BE USED,ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS KEVIN

Look for "pex underground" on the Internet for information. Yes it can be used there.

As to size it will depend on the length of the run, and the rate of flow. You can find friction loss info at "pex friction loss" on the Internet too.

If I cut the water supply to house do I need to turn off hot water heater?
Consider This

Cut the water supply and I can hear the hot water heater making noise. Will I damage it? I needed to turn off water because of a busted pipe and I can't find a switch that turns off power just to hot water heater.

For safety's sake yes, turn off the hot water heater.

If you can't find the switch (it's prolly a breaker in the breaker box/load center), turn off the power to the house.

If the water drains from the hot water heater while it's still on, you could be forcing a R/L test of the T&P valve.

how does a well work for a house water supply?
DSC_0013

we bought a house with a well and don't know how the basic system works. We've heard that there's a bladder or reservoir, and a pump....anyone who can explain the basics?

Yes you have a well, and the pump which is either in the well or in the house that has a control box to regulate pressure. it goes into a reservoir tank or blatter tank to even the pressure. then into your main supply. I will try to find link for you

    Build another one.

I’m selling it for only $18,000. The trailer was built brand new and is box frame (not C channel). I paid around $3800 to have the trailer built.

The humanure toilet is working great. I’m using peat moss instead of sawdust and it seems to be working just fine. There is absolutely no odor at all. I chose peat moss because I can go to Home Depot and buy a big bag of it for $6.00. I don’t know where to get sawdust at.

I have a 10 gallon water heater for the sink and the shower that works beautiful. It acutally works better than the house I just moved out of. I have a garden hose coming from the land owner’s house for my water supply.

It took me less than 3 months to build the tiny house. I started in May of 2009. Feel free to call or email me if you have any questions or know anyone interested.

    Thank you,

FPL asked about corporate jets and plans to grow staff

Show that FPL spent more than $25 million the past three years on corporate jets and helicopters.

Florida Public Service Commission staffers asked FPL President Armando Olivera Wednesday about the aircraft and whether it could be used for personal travel.

Olivera said FPL has three corporate jets -- one Falcon jet and two Cessna Citations -- and officials are allowed to use them for personal trips but they need prior approval and they must pay the equivalent of a first class plane ticket.

Olivera was also asked why FPL is growing its staff when the utility has lost customers and power usage is down because of the recession.

He said it's a small increase that's driven partly by a new power plant in Palm Beach County and more nuclear power employees.

Poor Julie, I guess no one told you that the Sun-Sentinel and Orlando Sentinel are owned by Tribune Co. and that they are trying to give LUDICROUS executive pay packages while in BANKRUPTCY court right now. Thanks for running the company into the groud, here's a million dollar bonus! Sounds just like AIG and Morgan Stanley, doesn't it? You should be a little more care next time before you get on your soap box to preach about FPL - who may pay their execs a lot but at least they're not bankrupt and trying to do it. Give me a break. You and the Sun-Sentinel are a complete joke...
