Our town gets it's water from several wells within the town and it is treated. I have calcium buildup at every faucet, shower. I'm cleaning constantly. Will a whole house filter help with this situation?
A water softener will do better but you will have problems then with the calcium in your pipes turning loose and stopping them up. The only hope you have unless it is a newer house is to deal with it. The softener will help stop the build up but will help to cut loose years of build up in the pipes that will stop up the breakers and water savers in your faucets anyway. If you have a real problem you may just unscrew the screens on your faucets and remove all the plastic you see then just screw the screen back on. The white plastic parts that you see are the water savers and stop up easily. Just do away with them and use just the screen to bread up the stream of water to cut down on splashing.

Was wondering if someone could tell me how to install a whole house filter, where to get the filter, how much they would cost
I am looking to install one because my water is killing my hair, shampoo doesnt suds up too well.
Whole house filters come in various sizes, and in quality of what they will filter. The type your looking for (names escapes me now), but I think its Honeywell, and costs around $30 for the shell, and then $30 every 3 months for a new filter. This type of filter will take out the chlorine which is what is ruining your hair, and if you color/highlight etc..turning that a different shade. The good thing is that once its installed, you don't have to buy a water filter for the fridge or sink, as the filter does exactly what they do, but for the whole house.
To install, find the main line coming into the house, probably 1 1/2" white PVC (depending on where you live). The basics are 2 good shut off valves, additional PVC, couplings, 90 degrees couplings, primer and glue. Shut off the water, cut the main line....attach new pipe, and run to the closest wall. Mount the filter and attach to new pipe.....from the outlet side, attach more new pipe and run back to connect to the pipe leading into the house. All-in-all, about a couple of hours worth of work.
With new tub, new hot water heater and a whole house reverse osmosis filter seems it shouldn't. Starts off clear and gets ruddy towards end of fill. What can I do to solve problem? Would appreciate any input - thanks.
This is probably happening because of old pipes in the house. Hot Spring Spas makes an attachment that will catch all of that metal debris and help purify the water before it goes in your tub.... its called a pre filter. We have the same problem in my spa showroom when we are filling spas. Use that pre filter.... no more problems. Theyre 50-60 bucks... totally worth it.
I have an old water softener from a previous house. My new house needs a whole house charcoal filter. Can I change out the softener media for activated charcoal and use the same filter for whole house removal of taste etc.? If so, what steps are required?
Thanks for offering your experience. RO really won't work for me because of my water volume. Am hoping to be able to exchange the media for charcoal in a traditional softener.
I tried to do the same thing when I bought my house, but ended up replacing the reverse osmosis filter system under the kitchen sink for about $100.

I need to insulate a whole house water filter. I am going to be taking the water filter outdoors. How can i protect the water filter fron weather conditions? How do i insulate a while house water filter?
I would build a box for it and insulate the pipes with either heat tape or some good insulation and insulate the box with lots of fiberglass.
You'd have to make it so no water gets in there.
Maybe use some old roofing on top to match the house.
For A Lasting Filter, Whole House Is Recommended.
Water filters that last a life time is naturally hard to find with the variety of choices out there. When health and well-being is involved families should install the best water filter available. Filters range from countertop filters, faucets filters, undersink filters, camping filters all of which do a great job at minimum cost. There is however only one outstanding talked about filter, whole house. In my opinion, Whole House filters are the best due to its proven results in supplying the entire house with quality drinking water.
The main difference between a filter whole house system and other filters is that it is the only filter which is able to filter water throughout the entire household, that is, it can provide filtered water throughout any water outlet in your house, from kitchen taps to toilets and even garden sprinklers. Installing a whole house filter is simple and easy; I purchased my first one around 2 years ago and found that all I had to do was to attach the input line from the water source to my whole house filter. The Whole house filter I had installed also has in built by-pass valve which means that I could control whenever I wanted to wash my cars or water my lawns with normal water and this saved me on some electricity and unnecessary water filter use.
...Wildfires Air Pollution: How to Protect Yourself
According to a 2008 Harvard study, emissions from wildfires in North America can have important consequences for air quality both regionally and at sites thousands of kilometers from the fire. The increase in ultrafine particles in the air resulting from these wildfires can have long-lasting negative health effects. We’ve compiled a list of tips to follow if you live in or around areas affected by wildfires:
Stay indoors and keep your doors and windows closed. Consider purchasing an IQAir Perfect 16 Whole-House Air Purification System or, at the very least, replace your furnace filter with a high-efficiency filter upgrade. These are available from most hardware and home improvement stores and cost $30-60. Run your air conditioning system. You can run the fan only, if you are comfortable...
